A Japanese residence card does not automatically survive every foreign trip. Mid-to-long-term residents who leave must use special re-entry at departure or hold a formal re-entry permit. Tourists on short stays follow different landing rules.
When does special re-entry work?
If you hold a valid passport and residence card, plan to return within one year, and your period of stay will not end sooner, you can usually tick the special re-entry box on the embarkation form at the airport or port. There is no separate bureau visit for that standard case. Return before the earlier of one year or your period-of-stay end date.
If your period of stay will expire while you are abroad, extend or change status before you leave: Extend stay and Change status of residence. Special re-entry does not invent extra months on an expiring card.
When do you need a formal re-entry permit?
