Is the United Kingdom dog-friendly in 2026?

Great Britain means England, Scotland, and Wales for pet-entry rules. A dog normally needs a readable microchip, rabies vaccination after microchipping, the correct travel document, an approved route, and tapeworm treatment when the origin requires it.

Northern Ireland follows a different pet-travel process. Check the route and document requirements separately rather than using a Great Britain checklist.

Restricted types and commercial movement rules can block or change entry. A rescue delivered by another person may be treated differently from a pet travelling with its owner.

Many landlords and building leases restrict pets. Ask in writing before paying and include the dog's age, size, training, references, insurance, and previous rental history.

Pubs and cafés decide whether ordinary dogs enter. Beaches and parks can have seasonal or area-specific restrictions. Around livestock, use a lead and follow the Countryside Code.

Owners must microchip dogs and keep details current under the applicable national rules. Public-space protection orders can require leads or exclude dogs locally.
