Microchipping is part of the standard process for owned dogs, and tags or registration documents should be available when asked.

For import, the Animal Quarantine Service requires health certificates, microchip proof and rabies vaccination sequences that depend on your departure country. Missing proof can mean quarantine at the owner's expense. Airline rules are separate from quarantine entry, so confirm crate, weight, breed, temperature and transfer restrictions with every carrier before booking.

Plan exit documents too, because a later destination may require a different rabies sequence.

Secure written landlord permission and read the building-management rules before paying a Japanese rental deposit. Many apartments and mansions post pet kinshi (no pets) rules, and a listing marked pet-friendly may only describe one owner's consent, not the building.

Tokyo operates designated dog runs and pet exercise areas in selected parks, while Osaka Prefecture lists fenced runs at several prefectural parks and Osaka City points residents toward private runs at sites such as Tennoji Park and Tsurumi Ryokuchi. Entry rules, leash requirements and opening hours differ by facility. These spaces do not make every nearby café, shrine grounds or shopping street dog-accessible.

On JR (Japan Railways) and many other operators, small dogs may travel in a closed carrier if they meet size and weight limits stated in the operator's passenger rules. Large dogs generally cannot ride as ordinary passengers. Taxi and bus acceptance varies by driver and company. Before leasing, identify a pet-accepting route to an emergency clinic.

Tokyo has deep specialist-veterinary choice but also humid summers, cold winter walks and high-rise lift dependence. Osaka and Fukuoka share summer heat and humidity that limit midday exercise. Hokkaido winters require paw protection and shorter outdoor sessions, while Okinawa adds heat and typhoon disruption.

Choose a routine clinic and a named emergency option before moving. Ask about English support, overnight monitoring and referral capability. Pet hotels and day-care facilities are common in cities when travel or long office days arise, but booking rules and vaccination proof vary.

Use a leash, collect waste and follow the posted rule for each park or facility. Japan designates certain breeds and aggressive incidents under stricter local controls, so ask the municipal office or veterinarian about muzzle or insurance obligations for your dog rather than guessing from appearance.
