Switzerland does not issue one nationwide "tax ID card" the way some countries do after city hall registration. Your tax file is cantonal. The number banks and foreign authorities often ask for as a Swiss TIN is your 13-digit AHV/AVS social security number, not a separate stamp from the tax office.

What number is the Swiss tax ID?

For natural persons living in Switzerland, the Federal Tax Administration states that the AHV insurance number is the tax identification number used in the automatic exchange of information with partner states. Companies use a UID (Unternehmens-Identifikationsnummer) instead. Get or recover the person number through work or the compensation office: Get a social security number.

Your canton still assigns its own case or dossier references for letters, e-filing, and payment slips. Those local numbers are not a second national identity. Keep AHV/AVS, the cantonal tax reference, and your residence permit data separate so payroll and banks do not mix them.

How does tax registration actually start?

First finish municipal address registration. The Einwohnerkontrolle or contrôle des habitants records where you live. That address points the file to the right canton and commune for tax.

If you are a foreign employee without a settlement permit (C permit), and you are not exempt because a spouse or registered partner is Swiss or already holds a C permit, your employer normally registers you for Quellensteuer, meaning tax withheld from salary. Cantons such as Zurich expect the employer to notify the cantonal tax office promptly with nationality, permit type, workload, and the AHV number. You do not invent a federal application form to "activate" tax residency.

People on ordinary assessment (Swiss citizens, C-permit holders, and many spouses of Swiss or C holders) receive the annual tax-return invitation from the cantonal tax administration for the commune where they live at year-end. Set up the canton's e-tax login or AGOV early: Set up SwissID covers the private login; tax portals often need the authority login as well.

Residence status shapes which track you enter, so finish the residence-permit steps with matching identity details before you argue with payroll about withholding codes.

Quellensteuer or ordinary assessment?

Withholding is monthly payroll tax remitted by the employer to the canton linked to your registered home. It can settle employment tax for the year when no later ordinary assessment is required. If gross employment income reaches the federal CHF 120,000 threshold, or if other income or assets trigger your canton's rules, you must move into a subsequent ordinary assessment and file a full return. A voluntary ordinary assessment is also possible in many cases, but once chosen it usually sticks for later years while you remain under withholding liability.

Ordinary assessment means one combined return for direct federal tax plus cantonal and communal income and wealth tax. How to file that return is covered in File taxes in Switzerland. Local tax rates also change what "affordable" means after rent and insurance: How expensive is Switzerland.

Common misconceptions

The AHV/AVS number is not a tax clearance certificate and not proof that your cantonal file is open. It identifies you for social insurance and, for people, for international tax reporting.

Municipal Anmeldung is not a finished tax registration. Without the employer withholding registration or an ordinary-assessment invitation from the Steueramt, you still have unfinished tax admin.

A cantonal dossier number on a letter is also not a replacement for the AHV/AVS TIN when a bank asks for Switzerland's person tax ID under reporting rules.

Summary

Register your real Swiss address, obtain the AHV/AVS number, and let payroll or the cantonal tax office place you on Quellensteuer or ordinary assessment. There is no separate federal tax-ID application for individuals beyond that path.

Keep passport spellings, permit type, and AHV digits identical across municipality, employer, and bank forms so the cantonal file opens cleanly the first time.
