Who needs a NITE versus a DIMEX?
If DGME has already issued your DIMEX, that number typically becomes your identity key for factura electrónica and many DGT registrations: Get a DIMEX. A NITE helps foreigners still waiting on residence approval, non-residents issuing or receiving electronic invoices, and certain entity cases that cannot use a cédula jurídica. Individual foreigner NITE formats commonly start with the 3-120 pattern in tax guidance.
Do not treat NITE as a shortcut around immigration. Residence still runs through DGME categories such as rentista or pensionado: Apply for a residence permit. Banks still prefer DIMEX for full resident products: Open a bank account.
How do you request and use it?
Register or renew through the Dirección General de Tributación channels and the TRIBU-CR / OVi digital flow Hacienda publishes for user creation. Foreign individuals may log in with NITE or, once available, DIMEX. Keep passport data consistent and note that newer NITE records can carry expiry tied to passport validity or a Hacienda window. Match the identification type exactly when someone issues you an electronic invoice; wrong type codes cause rejected facturas.
Landlords, freelancers, and service providers may ask for your number before writing receipts. CAJA and immigration remain separate systems even when tax IDs appear on forms: Public health / CAJA. Common misconceptions
Assuming NITE replaces DIMEX for banking and CAJA fails. They solve different problems.
Assuming every tourist needs a NITE on day one also fails. Many movers only need it when invoice or pre-DIMEX tax activity appears.
