Greater Dublin offers the deepest employment market, public transport and specialist healthcare. Suburbs on the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART, the electrified coastal rail service), Luas (Dublin's light-rail system) or commuter rail can work well. A Kildare, Meath or Wicklow address only helps when station access, fares and office days make the commute realistic.

Around Cork, Ballincollig suits western access and city routes, Carrigaline can fit Ringaskiddy and harbour employment, and Midleton has commuter rail toward Cork city. These are not interchangeable family suburbs. Choose around the working parent whose trip is hardest.

In Galway, Knocknacarra favours west-city schools, University of Galway and hospital routes, while Oranmore favours eastern employment corridors. River Corrib crossings can disrupt a cross-city school run. In Limerick, Castletroy fits the University of Limerick and National Technology Park; Dooradoyle fits University Hospital Limerick and Raheen.

Waterford provides a regional hospital, university campus and ordinary city services. Kilkenny offers a smaller base with road and rail links, but specialist care or some jobs may require travel.

Dublin has the greatest specialist depth; Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford have major regional hospitals. General-practitioner capacity and waiting arrangements vary by practice, so check locally rather than assuming national uniformity.

Walk the school route at arrival time. Look for crossings, lighting, footpaths and whether activities require a car. On exposed Atlantic coasts, test wet-weather routines. Near rivers or low ground in Galway, Limerick, Cork, Waterford or Kilkenny, use the Office of Public Works flood maps before signing.
