Is Limerick a good place to live in 2026?

The city suits University of Limerick, healthcare, education, technology and professional-services workers. Castletroy contains the university and National Technology Park on the eastern side. Raheen and Dooradoyle form a southern employment and service corridor around industrial sites and University Hospital Limerick.

The wider Mid-West adds advanced manufacturing, life sciences and aviation around Shannon. IDA Ireland, the state agency supporting foreign direct investment, treats counties Limerick, Clare and Tipperary as one regional investment area. That economic link is real, but Shannon remains a separate town in County Clare.

Castletroy and nearby Monaleen fit University of Limerick and National Technology Park routines. Raheen and Dooradoyle suit the hospital and southern business areas. The city centre works better for Colbert rail station, central services and people whose workplace is on a direct bus line.

Transport for Ireland, the national public-transport information system, lists city routes connecting the university, centre, hospital and Raheen. Service coverage is useful along these spines, but orbital or late journeys can still favour a car. A Shannon-based job requires a regional plan rather than an ordinary city commute.

The M7 provides the main road toward Dublin. Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) links Limerick with Dublin and other cities, sometimes with a change at Limerick Junction. Shannon Airport is a strong regional asset for selected international routes, but it is not a Limerick city airport and has no operating rail link.

Limerick's housing search can offer different options from Dublin, but availability remains constrained and neighbourhood choice should follow the corridor. Compare actual homes in Castletroy, Dooradoyle, Raheen and the centre instead of assuming one citywide rent level.

University Hospital Limerick is in Dooradoyle. Use the Health Service Executive (HSE, the public health service) service finder for a required department and check local general-practitioner availability separately. Living near the hospital does not guarantee faster access to every form of care.

For families, Castletroy and Dooradoyle can simplify selected school and activity routes, but each school uses its own published admissions policy. Confirm a place and transport rather than treating proximity as a guarantee.

The River Shannon shapes central Limerick and parts of the wider region. Use the Office of Public Works (OPW, the state body publishing flood-risk maps) portal for the exact address, then ask about previous flooding, insurance and drainage. A broad neighbourhood reputation is not a property-level check.

Atlantic systems can bring wet and windy weather into the Mid-West. Inspect roof condition, ventilation and drying space. For an outer-area home, test the road to work after dark and during peak periods, not only on a quiet viewing trip.
