Is Galway a good place to live in 2026?

Galway suits people working in medical technology, University of Galway, Atlantic Technological University, University Hospital Galway, healthcare, software, tourism or the arts. IDA Ireland, the state agency supporting foreign direct investment, identifies life sciences as a defining West-region cluster.

It is less convincing for a mover who needs a broad fallback job market or regular direct long-haul flights. Galway does not have a full commercial passenger airport. Shannon Airport to the south and Ireland West Airport Knock to the north are the practical regional choices, with Dublin Airport relevant for a wider route list.

Salthill puts the promenade and coast beside west-city services, but exposed seafront streets take more wind and salt. Knocknacarra offers larger residential areas and services west of the Corrib; it can suit University of Galway or hospital access when the exact route works.

Renmore sits east of the centre with access toward the Dublin Road and Ballybrit side. Doughiska is useful for Parkmore, Ballybrit and east-side services. Oranmore, outside the city core, can fit an east-corridor job and has a rail station, but it should not be treated as a traffic-free suburb.

Transport for Ireland, the national public-transport information system, lists cross-city buses including routes linking Salthill with Parkmore and Oranmore with the centre. Timetables do not erase road congestion, so test the trip during the hours you will actually travel.

The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB, Ireland's rental regulator) rent index confirms that Galway is one of the country's high-pressure city markets. Do not sign for the wrong side of the city simply because it is the first available home. A daily crossing can outweigh a small rent difference.

Galway City Council describes a transport system shaped by heavy car reliance, a large rural hinterland and roads not suited to current traffic flows. The River Corrib divides east and west movement, while major employment and education sites draw traffic along radial corridors. Compact geography therefore does not guarantee a quick commute.

University Hospital Galway is on Newcastle Road, close to the university, while many medtech workplaces are east of the river. That split is central to choosing between Knocknacarra or Salthill and Renmore, Doughiska or Oranmore.

Atlantic exposure means frequent wet and windy conditions can affect cycling, school runs and coastal homes. Check Met Éireann forecasts, window seals, ventilation and drying space. Near the coast or a watercourse, use the Office of Public Works flood maps before committing to a property.

Use the Health Service Executive (HSE, the public health service) hospital pages for the service you need. A major hospital nearby does not mean every general practitioner has capacity or every appointment is available locally.
