How do you get an LNCH in Bulgaria in 2026?

An LNCH (ЛНЧ, Личен номер на чужденец / Personal Number of a Foreigner) is the ten-digit code issued to foreign nationals who complete residence registration or a residence permit. An EGN (ЕГН, Единен граждански номер / Unified Civil Number) is the civil personal number associated with Bulgarian citizens and certain civil-registration situations. Clerks and online forms often label every field “EGN” even when the correct value for you is an LNCH. Ask whether the system accepts the foreigner number printed on your Migration residence certificate or permit.

Temporary residents should expect an LNCH. Permanent residence or long civil history can change how some institutions talk about numbering; do not assume a newcomer temporary permit automatically produces a citizen-style EGN, and do not invent a number because a form rejects LNCH format.

The Migration Directorate issues the LNCH with the residence certificate for EU, EEA, and Swiss prolonged-stay registration, or with the temporary residence permit for most non-EU files after a Type D long-stay visa and arrival steps: Apply for a residence permit. There is no separate “LNCH appointment” at the municipality, and GRAO (Гражданска регистрация и административно обслужване / Civil Registration and Administrative Services) is not the first office for a foreigner’s number.
