How to get Sri Lanka’s Digital Nomad Visa

Apply to the Residence Visa Division with remote income proof, insurance, background checks, and a Ministry of Digital Economy recommendation letter.

Before you start

  • Work and clients stay outside Sri Lanka

You must be in remote employment, freelancing, or running a business not registered in Sri Lanka that serves clients abroad. Local jobs are not allowed.

  • One-year stay, renewable with tax registration

The visa is issued for 12 months and can be renewed. Renewals usually need proof you registered for tax with Sri Lanka Inland Revenue.

Budget USD 500 per year visa fee for the main applicant, spouse, and each dependent.

Official materials set USD 2,000 per month remittance for the main applicant. If you have more than two dependents, plan an extra USD 500 per month for each additional dependent.

Missing the ministry recommendation letter, an out-of-date police certificate, or weak remittance proof are common delays. Gather everything before you submit to Battaramulla.

  1. 1

Confirm you meet age and work rules

You must be 18 or older and show remote work or foreign business income, not local employment in Sri Lanka.

  2. 2

    Prepare monthly remittance proof

Collect bank or transfer records showing at least USD 2,000 per month for you, plus extra if you have more than two dependents.

  3. 3

Obtain Ministry of Digital Economy recommendation

Get the recommendation letter required in the official Digital Nomad Visa checklist before you file.

  4. 4

    Complete police and medical clearances

Arrange a police certificate under three months old, medical clearance, and the security clearance form.

  5. 5

    Buy international health insurance

Get coverage that includes medical care in Sri Lanka and matches the wording immigration expects.

  6. 6

Add spouse or dependents if needed

Prepare marriage and birth certificates, extra remittance proof, and per-person visa fees for family members.

  7. 7

Submit to the Residence Visa Division

File the application form, passport copy (six months validity), photos, request letter, and full document set in Battaramulla.

  8. 8

    Wait for eligibility review

Immigration checks compliance. Reply quickly if officers ask for clearer income or background documents.

  9. 9

    Receive passport visa endorsement

After approval, the one-year visa is placed in your passport. Keep copies of all approval papers.

  10. 10

    Plan renewal or orderly departure

Before expiry, renew with updated documents and Inland Revenue tax registration proof, or give notice if you leave permanently.
