Sri Lanka opens a one-year digital nomad visa
Remote workers can apply for a 12-month Digital Nomad Visa if they show about USD 2,000 monthly income from abroad, insurance, and official paperwork.

Sri Lanka finally has a named Digital Nomad Visa on the books. Press coverage picked it up in February 2026, and the immigration department now publishes a full category checklist. If you earn from employers or clients outside the country, this is the route to plan a year on the island without pretending to be a short tourist.
It is not a work permit for local jobs. You must be 18 or older, work remotely or run a business that is not registered in Sri Lanka, and keep your income tied to foreign sources.
What the official category says
- Income: at least USD 2,000 per month remittance for the main applicant (about €1,700 at typical rates).
- Dependents: spouse and children can join. If you list more than two dependents, budget an extra USD 500 per month for each additional one.
- Stay length: one year, with annual renewal possible if you stay compliant.
- Fees: USD 500 per year for the main applicant, spouse, and each dependent.
- Documents: passport valid six months, police certificate under three months, medical clearance, security clearance form, international health insurance, proof of remittance, and a recommendation from the Ministry of Digital Economy.
- Renewal: plan to show tax registration with Sri Lanka Inland Revenue when you extend, on top of the first-issue paperwork.
- Rules: no local employment, and you must report changes to job, income, or dependents within 30 days.
Why people are paying attention
Beaches, wildlife parks, and the train through the tea country sell the lifestyle story. For remote workers, the visa fee is modest compared with some European nomad routes, and you can open a personal bank account and rent long term once approved.
The honest caveat: fixed broadband is still weak in global speed rankings. I would test your actual upload where you plan to live before you sign a 12-month lease.
What I would do this week
- Download the Digital Nomad Visa Category PDF and match every line to your passport and family file.
- Start the ministry recommendation letter early. That step is easy to underestimate.
- Walk through our Sri Lanka digital nomad residence page and skim Sri Lanka country scores if you are choosing between South and Southeast Asia bases (for example Thailand vs Vietnam).

2,000 USD/m is too much for a country like Sri Lanka, their minimum wage is around 100 usd
