Is Vietnam a good place to retire in 2026?

Vietnam's electronic visa, commonly called an e-visa, is time-limited entry permission. It is useful for a trial stay, not a stable residence plan built on repeated exits. Check the official immigration portal for the live duration and entry conditions rather than assuming renewal or border access.

Family connection can create a route for some people. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes visa and exemption options for overseas Vietnamese and qualifying foreign spouses or children of Vietnamese citizens. A temporary residence card, meaning a document allowing an eligible foreign national to live in Vietnam for its validity period, is available only through defined categories and sponsorship.

Work and investment routes require real qualifying activity. A work permit is official permission for covered foreign employment and is employer-led under current rules. Do not create a sham job, paper company, or nominal investment to imitate a retirement route. Have a licensed Vietnamese adviser confirm the category, sponsor, tax position, and exit risk before moving assets.

Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have Vietnam's broadest specialist hospitals, diagnostics, international flights, and insurer networks. Their drawbacks are road congestion, difficult crossings, air pollution, and long emergency journeys from the wrong address. A familiar old District 2 or West Lake label matters less than the real route to a named hospital.

Da Nang offers a close airport, flatter urban sections, beach and river routines, and a smaller scale. Specialist depth is thinner, so cardiac, cancer, neurological, or complex surgery needs may lead to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Hoi An depends further on the Da Nang road, especially during central-coast storms and flooding.

Nha Trang gives an urban beach and provincial services, but Cam Ranh airport is outside the main city corridor and complex care may require travel. Hanoi's cool damp winter and seasonal air concern differ from Ho Chi Minh City's heat and flood exposure. Test the difficult season before choosing a health-sensitive retirement base.

Secure international or Vietnamese private medical insurance in writing before the move. Check age limits, chronic-condition exclusions, direct billing, medication, outpatient cover, evacuation, and treatment outside Vietnam. Routine clinic prices do not show the cost of cancer care, intensive care, or a medically assisted flight.

Choose housing for future mobility. A lift-dependent Nha Trang tower needs backup power; a Da Nang beach home needs storm access; a Ho Chi Minh City hẻm (small urban lane) may block car pickup. Get the current phường (urban ward) address after Vietnam's 2025 administrative reform and ensure the host completes temporary residence registration, the required report of a foreign guest's address to local police.

Banking, tax, and property need individual advice. Foreign ownership of housing is restricted and does not grant residence. Tax can depend on presence, income source, and activity. Keep a usable overseas account, powers of attorney, wills, beneficiary records, and guidance on how Vietnamese and home-country estate rules interact.

Language becomes a care issue, not just a social benefit. Learn health, address, medication, and emergency phrases; keep translated medical summaries. Build local friends and paid support beyond one partner or adult child, because hospital advocacy, transport, and daily care can become too much for one person.
