How can expat families find community in Vietnam in 2026?

Ho Chi Minh City has the widest choice of international and bilingual schools, but campuses spread across very different corridors. District 2, District 7, and Thảo Điền remain familiar area names after district-level government ended in 2025; they are not current administrative units. Ask for the campus's current phường (urban ward), bus boundary, pickup time, and activity transport before choosing a home.

Hanoi school networks form around West Lake, western developments, Long Bien, and other campus clusters. Tây Hồ, Cầu Giấy, and Nam Từ Liêm are familiar search labels rather than current district governments. A school community near West Lake may not survive a parent's daily journey toward Nội Bài airport or a northern industrial site.

Da Nang gives many families shorter-looking routes and closer access to beach, river, and airport activities. Its smaller school market means less backup if admissions fail, learning support changes, or a teenager needs another examination pathway. Hoi An is now within expanded Da Nang after the 2025 reorganisation, but dependence on Da Nang schools and specialist care can still make the family week road-heavy.

Verify an international school's claims through the Council of International Schools, an accreditation and membership body, or the International Baccalaureate, which authorises schools to deliver its programmes. A parent-teacher association (a school group where parents and staff support activities and communication) can provide introductions, but it cannot fix a poor curriculum or commute match.

Class representatives, pickup, sports days, music, swimming, football, martial arts, and weekend arts create repeated contact in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang. Apartment compounds can add play areas, pools, and resident events. Ask whether the building group includes long-term Vietnamese and mixed-language families or mainly one school's short assignment cycle.

Mixed-language households should ask schools how Vietnamese and home languages appear in class communication, counselling, and events. A child may enter a Vietnamese-speaking activity faster than a parent. One family language class or neighbourhood sport can keep parents from relying entirely on the international-school circle.

Tết (the Lunar New Year holiday) can close schools and activities while Vietnamese families travel or focus on relatives. Compare the school calendar with employer leave and childcare plans. A quiet parent chat during Tết is not evidence that the community disappeared.

Map a paediatric clinic, emergency department, and any required specialist before signing in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, or Da Nang. Ask the insurer about direct billing, referrals, medicine continuity, and emergency transfer. A Nha Trang or Hoi An parent network may be warm, yet regular specialist trips can still make the location unworkable.

Ask every school, camp, coach, and arts provider about staff checks, child collection, transport supervision, photography consent, bullying reports, and emergency contacts. Do not post a child's passport, current address, bus stop, class list, medical record, or live location in a large parent group. Confirm an urgent payment request with the school through a known channel.

Housing and school access do not grant immigration permission. A school place, apartment lease, or parent group does not create residence or work rights for either adult. Confirm each family member's lawful basis for stay and each working adult's permission through Vietnam's official immigration and employment process.
