Where does it snow in Türkiye in 2026?

Erzurum, Kars, Ardahan and other eastern highland areas have Türkiye's most dependable urban snow and longest snow burden. Heating, covered parking, pipe protection and snow clearance affect ordinary housing decisions. Outside city centres, a high pass or exposed final road can isolate a home before the main highway closes.

High Central Anatolia also receives meaningful snow. Ankara and Eskişehir see periodic cover and ice, while Kayseri and Sivas have stronger elevation and continental exposure. A central apartment may keep access to hospitals and schools better than an outer hillside development, even when both listings use the same city name.

Bolu sits on important mountain approaches between Istanbul and Ankara, where snow, fog and ice can affect motorway and intercity bus travel. The same concern applies to high roads through the Black Sea interior. A job that requires weekly travel across a pass creates a different winter risk from a metro commute inside Ankara.

Bursa can receive urban snow, but elevation changes the pattern sharply toward Uludağ. The low city, upper districts and mountain road should not be treated as one snow zone. Ask who clears a compound entrance and whether a steep garage ramp remains usable.

Istanbul snow is irregular rather than dependable. Black Sea exposure, poyraz (a cool north-easterly wind) and local elevation can produce large neighbourhood differences. Even short-lived snow can delay buses, flights and road traffic because steep streets and long cross-city routes have little spare capacity.

Lowland Izmir and Antalya rarely receive snow. Nearby mountains can be white while the coastal city has rain, so a mountain-facing view is not evidence of snowy conditions at home.

Ask for the building and road elevation, not only the province. In eastern Türkiye and the Black Sea interior, a valley-floor hospital, a hillside village and a mountain pass can have different snow, wind and clearance. Confirm the final municipal road, private driveway and walking route to public transport.

In Erzurum, Kars, Kayseri or Sivas, inspect the heating system, roof, gutters, entrance canopy and where cleared snow is stored. Check winter sunlight and ice on north-facing paths. For a detached home, ask how pipes and water equipment are protected during long cold spells.

AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, Türkiye's national disaster agency) identifies the eastern and south-eastern mountains and very high Black Sea interiors as avalanche-suitable terrain. Its guidance is relevant to residents using exposed roads and slopes, not only mountain visitors. Avoid treating an avalanche bulletin as a citywide warning; match it to the exact route and terrain.

Kış lastiği (winter tyre) requirements do not automatically cover every private car nationwide. The national rule applies to commercial passenger and goods vehicles on intercity roads, while private-car use is officially recommended; governorships may set local details. Chains do not replace a legal tyre duty for a covered vehicle.

KGM (General Directorate of Highways, the national road operator) publishes road conditions and closures. Check KGM before Bolu, eastern passes or high Black Sea routes, and check the airline or bus operator separately. Keep chains and emergency equipment suitable for the actual route, but do not let equipment justify driving through a closure.
