Türkiye's weather changes with sea, elevation and distance from the coast. An Istanbul renter, an Ankara commuter and a family in Erzurum prepare for different seasons, even when a national forecast shows one weather symbol.
How do Türkiye's seven main weather regions differ?
Marmara and Istanbul sit between the Black Sea and the Aegean influence. Summers can be humid, winters are damp and changeable, and intermittent snow can disrupt steep roads and buses. Poyraz (a cool north-easterly wind) can make Bosphorus crossings rough, while lodos (a warm south-westerly wind that can bring rough weather) can affect ferries and exposed streets. Check window seals, bedroom ventilation and your cross-water commute.
The Aegean around Izmir has hot, dry summers and rain weighted toward the cooler part of the year. A meltem (summer sea breeze) can ease heat near an exposed coast, but it does not cool every inland or west-facing flat. Shade, air conditioning and wildfire access matter around wooded parts of Izmir and Muğla; intense rain can still overwhelm low roads and basement garages.
The Mediterranean belt around Antalya, Mersin and Adana combines mild winters with humid summer heat. Cooling can dominate electricity use, while short intense downpours make drainage, underpasses and ground-floor homes important checks. Forest-edge districts also need an OGM (General Directorate of Forestry, the agency responsible for forests and wildfire response) warning and evacuation plan.
Central Anatolia, including Ankara and Eskişehir, has a continental plateau pattern: dry air, hotter summer days, cooler nights, winter frost and periodic snow. Elevation widens the difference from the coast. Inspect heating, roof insulation and the road to work or school rather than assuming Ankara follows Istanbul.
The Black Sea around Trabzon and Rize is humid and receives rain through the year. Steep slopes, cloud, wet laundry and limited drying weather make drainage, retaining walls, roof condition and mould control part of the housing search. Inland valleys behind the coastal mountains can differ quickly from the shore.
Erzurum and Kars represent the eastern highlands, where elevation brings long, severe winters, persistent snow and difficult road conditions. Gaziantep and Diyarbakır in the southeast have much hotter, drier summers and colder winter nights than Mediterranean coastal cities. In both regions, the exact elevation and road exposure can matter more than latitude.
What do these patterns change for a mover?
In Antalya or Adana, test air conditioning in the bedrooms, exterior shade and backup plans for a power or water interruption. In Ankara or Erzurum, ask for previous winter heating bills and whether the home uses a kombi (individual gas boiler) or building-wide heat. In Trabzon, inspect behind wardrobes and around window frames for condensation and mould.
MGM (Turkish State Meteorological Service, Türkiye's official weather agency) issues province-level forecasts and colour-coded warnings. Check MGM before a Bosphorus ferry, a Bolu mountain-road journey or an eastern winter drive. OGM notices matter for forest-edge homes on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.
Climate hazards do not replace structural checks. AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, Türkiye's national disaster agency) earthquake information describes ground hazard, not the safety of one building. Review permits, alterations and engineering evidence separately from flood, heat, snow and fire access.
Common misconceptions
Türkiye is not uniformly Mediterranean. Rize's wet slopes, Ankara's elevated plateau and Kars's snowy highlands do not share Antalya's winter or Izmir's summer pattern.
A coastal address is not automatically comfortable. Istanbul humidity, Antalya night heat and Black Sea damp can make a poorly ventilated flat harder to live in than an inland home with suitable heating and insulation.
Summary
Match the address to the regional climate: humid Marmara, dry-summer Aegean, hot Mediterranean, continental Central Anatolia, wet Black Sea, cold eastern highlands or hot-dry southeast. Then test the building's heating, cooling, drainage and ventilation, plus the weather resilience of your daily route.
