Spanish address updates are not one click. The ayuntamiento records where you live on the padrón. Immigration identity for many non-EU residents sits on the TIE and the Central Register of Foreigners. Social Security, Agencia Tributaria, and your bank each keep their own domicile field. Fix the municipal record first, then clear the immigration notice when your status requires it, then chase the private and social systems that still mail you at the old flat.
How do you change the padrón?
Register or transfer the address at the ayuntamiento for the municipality where you now sleep. Bring identity evidence and the housing proof that council asks for tenants, owners, or authorised guests. Councils such as Madrid and Barcelona publish their own lists, so do not reuse another city's checklist. Ask for a recent volante or certificado de empadronamiento; many later offices reject proofs older than a few months. Full steps live in how to register on the padrón.
Keep the spelling of your name, passport, and NIE identical to your immigration file. A padrón typo will bounce through TIE appointments and renewals.
When must you notify extranjería or police?
Interior guidance for TIE holders says you must personally report changes of nationality and habitual domicile, and other data that affect the card, to the Comisaría de Policía or police services in the Oficina de Extranjeros for the place where you reside, normally within one month of the change. Refugees domiciled in Madrid follow the specialised asylum office channel instead of a generic local desk.
Bring passport, TIE or other stay evidence, and a fresh padrón proof. Moving does not automatically reprint a new plastic card; you communicate the change so notifications and register data stay correct. If a renewal is already due, coordinate the address update with residence renewal so the new card and padrón match. Pending extranjería files also need the new notification address through the channel that office uses.
What about banks, Social Security, and other files?
Padrón and police notice do not rewrite every Spanish database. Update Importass or TGSS contact data if you receive Social Security mail. Tell Agencia Tributaria your fiscal domicile when it differs or when census rules require a change. Banks and insurers need their own KYC address change; a landlord letter alone rarely suffices.
Treat the move as part of the wider paperwork after moving checklist: same NIE, same Spanish street line, same postcode everywhere that still holds an old address.
Common misconceptions
One misconception is that empadronamiento alone updates extranjería. Municipal registration and the Interior one-month notice are separate duties for TIE holders.
Another is that you can wait until the card expires. The deadline runs from the address change, not from the TIE validity date.
It is also wrong to assume every province uses the same appointment label on the police portal. Check the local procedure name before you book.
Summary
Change the padrón where you live, notify police or extranjería within the Interior window when you hold a TIE, and separately correct banks, Social Security, and tax domicile. Keep one consistent Spanish address string across every file so renewals and notifications land in the right letterbox.
