Spanish immigration treats your tipo de autorización as the legal product, not the plastic card in your wallet. If you need different rights, for example full-time work after studies, you file a modificación with the Oficina de Extranjería. That is different from a plain renewal of the same category and different from a brand-new first residence application lodged from abroad.
When is a modificación the right tool?
Ministry guidance for study stays shows the pattern movers ask about most: holders of a long-stay study or certain training authorisations who finish the programme and obtain the title or certificate can move into residence and work as an employee, self-employed residence and work, residence with a work exception, or other listed destinations such as job-search residence after higher education, when they meet the live hoja for that path.
Under the current Immigration Regulation, those study-to-work shifts are designed to be requested from inside Spain without a fresh consular visa when the article conditions are met. Timing matters: file in the official window before the study stay expires, with the limited post-expiry margin the hoja describes. Filing on time can keep rights alive, and for some employee modifications the rules allow provisional work once the application is admitted.
Other cambios exist between residence types, family routes, and exceptional circumstances. Always open the specific procedimiento page for your from-to pair instead of copying a classmate’s student checklist. EU citizens use registration certificates rather than TIE modificación logic; keep that track separate.
How do you file, then update the TIE?
Prepare the EX form the hoja names, passport, current card, NIE details, and route evidence: signed employment contract conditioned on authorisation effectiveness for cuenta ajena, business and contribution plans for cuenta propia, or the documents listed for exception-of-work routes. Digital filing with a certificate or Cl@ve is common where the sede offers it. Provincial offices in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Málaga publish their own appointment or telematic habits; use only official channels.
A favourable resolución grants the new status. Then book Policía Nacional fingerprints for a new TIE with form EX-17, photographs, and tasa 790-012 for the matching card concept. The new card should show the updated category and dates. Until collection, keep the resolution and any provisional work evidence with you.
Fold the change into your wider paperwork after moving list: Social Security alta, tax census updates, and bank KYC often need the new authorisation text, not only the old student card.
Common misconceptions
One misconception is that starting a job automatically converts a student stay. Employers still need you on a work-compatible authorisation; the modificación is the legal bridge.
Another is that the old TIE quietly expands its rights after graduation. Plastic text follows the resolution, not the diploma. A third is that modificación and renew are interchangeable labels on the appointment portal. Wrong labels waste months.
Summary
Match your from-to pair to the Ministry procedimiento, file the modificación with Extranjería on time with contracts or business evidence, then issue a new TIE after approval. Do not rely on renewals, informal job starts, or the previous card category to create rights the authorisation never granted.
