Amsterdam has the broadest international market in finance, technology, media, advertising, tourism, and company headquarters. It also carries the toughest housing search and heavy visitor pressure in central districts.

Rotterdam fits port, logistics, maritime, energy, engineering, architecture, and supply-chain work. Its modern layout and metro network feel very different from Amsterdam's canal core.

The Hague is the national seat of government and a centre for diplomacy, international law, security, and non-governmental organisations. Beach access and international schools make it especially practical for some families.

Eindhoven is the specialist choice for semiconductors, hardware, engineering, design, and the wider Brainport technology region. Utrecht offers a more mixed economy and the country's strongest central rail position.

Leiden combines university, life sciences, compact cycling, and rail access to The Hague, Amsterdam, and Schiphol. Delft suits engineering and a smaller historic setting between Rotterdam and The Hague.

Haarlem gives access to Amsterdam and the coast, but it should not be treated as a cheap Amsterdam substitute. Amersfoort, Arnhem, Nijmegen, Tilburg, and Breda can offer a different balance if your work is regional or remote.

Groningen provides a young university city and strong cycling culture, but it is far from the Randstad, the western metropolitan ring containing Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht.

Map the door-to-door trip by bicycle, station, transfer, and final walk. A home near an intercity station in another municipality can beat an outer-city address with two local transfers.
