Malaysia tax filing for newcomers is a MyTax workflow, not a MyKad automatic letter. Your employer withholds under the Schedular Tax Deduction scheme, then you still e-File the annual return that matches your residence status for the year.
Which form do you use?
Register a TIN on MyTax e-Daftar if LHDN has not already issued one: Get a tax number. Tax residence for individuals generally turns on whether you are in Malaysia for 182 days or more in the basis year. Residents usually file Form BE for employment income (Form B when business income applies) and can claim personal reliefs under the published schedule. Non-residents usually file Form M and are taxed at the non-resident individual rate (published at 30% for recent years of assessment), without the resident relief package.
Download your EA form from HR, match passport spelling to MyTax, and settle any balance before you treat the year as closed. Official LHDN receipts or verified bank transfers to LHDN count; a bank slip with only a manual stamp often fails ESD checks later. Keep PDF acknowledgements of e-BE or e-M filings in the same folder as your Employment Pass papers: Renew a residence permit.
How does filing connect to your pass and banking?
ESD renewal and change-of-employer packs ask for the latest e-BE or e-M pages plus proof that outstanding tax is settled. Monthly CP38 instalment plans do not count as cleared for that checklist: Get a work permit. A Malaysian mobile number and bank account make OTP login and refund paths smoother: Get a mobile phone and Open a bank account.
Tourist stamps with no Malaysian-source income usually do not create an annual filing habit. Once you take local employment or other Malaysian-source income, assume LHDN is in the picture even if your home country also taxes you. Dual-tax questions belong with a cross-border adviser; the filing duty still sits on MyTax.
Common misconceptions
Assuming employer withholding finishes your year fails. EA forms feed the return; they do not replace e-Filing.
Assuming under-182-day stayers skip tax entirely also fails when Malaysian-source income exists. Form M and the non-resident rate still apply.
Summary
Get a TIN, decide BE versus M from your 182-day status, e-File on MyTax with EA evidence, and archive the acknowledgement for ESD renewals. Treat tax as part of the pass chain, not an optional April chore.
