A Bosnian mobile number is a key for one-time passwords. Banks and many delivery apps expect a local line, and opening a bank account often stalls without one. The first reliable line is an official operator pack in your own name, not a street stall SIM already registered to someone else.
What do you take to the counter?
Go to a branded BH Telecom, m:tel, or HT Eronet shop in the city where you will stay. Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) lists a BH Telecom info desk on the ground floor of Terminal B that sells Ultra Tourist packs, prepaid SIMs, and top-ups; hours are posted on the airport page and can close earlier on Sundays. City branches such as BH Telecom centers around Branilaca Sarajeva or AriaMall cover Sarajevo once the airport desk is shut.
Carry your physical passport. Operator desks commonly ask for ID and keep a copy even when nationwide prepaid-registration rules remain a moving political story. Do not treat a passport photo on your phone as enough. Ask which tourist or Ultra start package is on sale that day, confirm data validity in convertible marks (KM), and stay until the SIM places a call or loads data before you leave.
English works at many branded counters in Sarajevo and tourist towns, yet SMS and app menus may still arrive in Bosnian, Croatian, or Serbian: English in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Match the operator to the region
Bosnia and Herzegovina is not one uniform radio map. BH Telecom is the usual default for Sarajevo and much of the Federation, including mountain routes. m:tel is often the practical pick if your lease is in Banja Luka or other Republika Srpska cities. HT Eronet is the stronger Herzegovina choice around Mostar. City choice still comes first: Where to live.
BH Telecom sells prepaid Tourist eSIMs through its web shop and points of sale, which can land on your phone before you leave arrivals. m:tel and HT Eronet tourist packs are easier to confirm in a physical shop. Home broadband and tram or bus cards are separate contracts; compare them with utilities, internet, and transport after the phone line exists.
Start on prepaid. Top up in KM through operator apps, vouchers, or the same branded desk. Visitor packs are tied to the validity the shop printed; renew only through the same operator. A line you activated can be recharged. A line registered to a stranger cannot.
What works before the store opens?
Landing late, or landing when the Terminal B desk is shut, leaves you without a Bosnian number for the ride into the city. If you want data before a BH Telecom or other prepaid SIM is active, an eSIM for the first days covers the airport and the trip to a branded store.
That travel eSIM is not your Bosnian mobile number. It will not reliably receive the bank texts that expect a local line. Use it until the shop finishes activation, then keep the BiH SIM in the phone. Where you sleep while you finish the shop visit still matters for address proof later: How to rent a home and Apply for a residence permit.
Common misconceptions
One misconception is that any kiosk on the ring road can legally hand you a clean prepaid line. Prefer BH Telecom, m:tel, or HT Eronet, and refuse a SIM that is already active in another name.
Another is that one operator is equally strong from Banja Luka to Mostar. Coverage is regional; pick the network that matches your city, then top up that brand.
Summary
Get a prepaid SIM or operator tourist eSIM in your own name at a branded desk, with your passport ready and the package validity confirmed in KM.
Use a travel eSIM only for the hours before that shop visit. Keep the Bosnian number for bank texts, and choose BH Telecom, m:tel, or HT Eronet based on where you actually live.
