Germany job market score cut after August unemployment rises to 6.5%

We lowered Germany's job market score from 9.5 to 9.3 on Country To Live. The Federal Employment Agency (BA) said the August 2026 labour market still showed little momentum beyond the usual summer pattern, with unemployment up to 3.061 million and the registered rate at 6.5%.

This is an editorial score for people comparing countries on our site. It is not a hiring forecast for one city, and Germany still sits in our strong-career band.

What the BA reported for August

• Unemployment ticked up. The BA August 2026 release put registered unemployment at 3,061,000, up 54,000 on the month and 36,000 on the year. The rate rose 0.1 points to 6.5%. Seasonally adjusted, the monthly rise was only 4,000.
• Demand stayed weak. Registered vacancies fell to 656,000, 25,000 below August 2025. Chair Andrea Nahles described a continuation of the subdued trend of recent months.
• Employment is lower than a year ago. The same briefing, citing Destatis, put persons in employment at 45.66 million in July, 226,000 below a year earlier. Social-insurance employment was 73,000 lower year on year in June.
• We kept the cut to 0.2. This is a mild, multi-month cooling, not a claim that German hiring collapsed. Other Germany scores stay put this round.

If hiring is your swing factor

1. Budget extra search time in shortage-light sectors. A national 6.5% registered rate still leaves room in engineering and care, but vacancy counts are thinner than a year ago.
2. Separate Blue Card math from the print. Permit rules sit in residency scores. This cut only marks softer hiring momentum.
3. Stress-test the real contract city. Use compare for Germany if your offer city is not Berlin or Munich.
