How to get Japan’s digital nomad visa
This is a short stay route (often up to six months). Check that your nationality qualifies, prove high yearly income and remote work abroad, then apply at the Japanese embassy.
Before you start
Check nationality rules first
Japan’s digital nomad visa may only be open to certain passport holders who meet visa-waiver and document rules before filing.
Work only for employers outside Japan
You work remotely for non-Japanese companies or clients. Do not assume you can take a local Japanese job on this visa.
For long-term residence or citizenship you usually need a different visa path.
This is not a long-term settlement visa. Duration, eligible countries, and document rules change. Check current MOFA and Immigration Services Agency guidance before applying.
Each Japanese consulate can use slightly different checklists. Follow the mission that handles your place of residence.
- 1
Check eligibility and stay length
Confirm your passport category fits and that a short designated-activities stay matches your plans, not permanent relocation.
- 2
Prove annual income in yen
Prepare tax records, income certificates, payroll or invoices, and bank statements that show you meet the yearly income requirement clearly.
- •Show a full year picture. Monthly fragments alone may not be enough.
- 3
Prove remote work abroad
Collect employer or client letters and contracts showing pay and work for entities outside Japan.
- 4
Buy private health insurance
Get coverage that meets Japan’s stated minimums and present policy papers in the format your consulate requests.
- •Use insurer certificates with clear limits and validity dates.
- 5
Prepare housing and travel plans
Provide your intended address and itinerary for the limited stay period you are requesting.
- 6
Complete visa forms
Fill all required forms accurately, including work descriptions and any extra statements your consulate asks for.
- 7
Apply at the embassy
Attend your appointment, submit originals and copies per the checklist, pay fees, and keep copies of everything.
- 8
Reply quickly to questions
Answer clarifications on income, insurance wording, or work nature so your file does not stall or get refused for weak proof.
- 9
Enter Japan on your visa
Travel within the validity period and follow the stay conditions on your designated activities status.
- 10
Plan departure or next visa
Leave before your stay ends or switch to another eligible status. This category does not automatically become long-term residence.
This is general information, not legal advice. Japan eligibility lists, income rules, and consulate steps can change. Check official MOFA and Immigration Services Agency guidance before you apply.

Citizenship & nationality
Japan digital nomad rules are strict in 2026. They target high earners and short stays. You must usually come from a visa-waiver country and meet income and insurance rules.
- •Income is often about 10 million yen per year or more. Exchange rates change, so USD figures are only a guide.
- •Stay is usually up to six months. It is not a standard long-term residence permit you renew for years.
- •Work must be for companies or clients outside Japan. Local jobs or serving Japanese clients need other visas.
- •Insurance must meet published benefit levels and be shown in the format the consulate requests.
Read Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance for the country list and exact income and insurance papers before you apply.
