How to get Colombia’s Visa V digital nomad stay
Confirm your passport is short-stay visa exempt, gather foreign employer or client proof, show three months of bank income at three times the minimum wage, buy Colombia health cover, then file Visa V.
Before you start
Work must stay with foreign companies
Visa V is for remote or telework paid by foreign firms, or for a digital or IT venture of interest to Colombia. Paid work for a Colombian company or resident is not allowed.
Passport must be short-stay visa exempt
The published Visa V digital nomad checklist starts with a passport from a country or territory on Colombia’s short-stay visa exemption list. Check the live list before you pay fees.
A short visa-free remote visit (up to 90 days, sometimes toward 180) is not the same as a two-year Visa V.
Cancillería sets the floor at three times the current SMLMV for each of the last three months of bank statements. For 2026 that is about COP 5,252,715 per month. Only short-stay visa-exempt passports use this Visa V category as published.
Consulates and the online visa channel can ask for slightly different document packs. Follow the checklist for your filing office.
- 1
Confirm passport and work fit
Check the short-stay visa exemption list and confirm your work is for foreign companies or a qualifying digital venture.
- 2
Collect foreign work proof
Get Spanish or English letters from foreign employers or clients describing the link and pay. Add contracts if you have them. Company owners can show ownership plus a remote-work letter.
- 3
Prepare a venture letter if you are founding
If you apply as a digital or IT founder, write a short plan covering the project and the money and people you will use.
- 4
Assemble three months of bank proof
Export statements that show at least three times the 2026 SMLMV each month for the last three months. Keep the totals easy to read.
- •Add a one-page table with each month’s inflow next to the 3× SMLMV figure.
- 5
Buy Colombia-wide health cover
Get a policy for your planned stay that covers accident, illness, maternity, disability, hospital care, death, and repatriation in Colombia.
- 6
File Visa V and pay fees
Submit through the Cancillería visa channel your consulate uses, pay study and visa fees, and attend any interview they set.
- 7
Travel and keep papers ready
Enter with the approved visa and carry employer letters, bank proof, and insurance for border or migration checks.
- 8
Keep remote foreign work only
Do not take paid work for Colombian residents. Track visa end dates if you plan to renew or leave.
This is informational only. Colombia’s Cancillería and your consulate set the live Visa V rules. Confirm them before you apply.

Citizenship & nationality
Visa V digital nomad filing is for people who hold a passport from a country or territory that Colombia lists as short-stay visa exempt. EU free-movement rules do not apply here. Check the live exemption list before you apply.
- •If your passport needs a short-stay visa to visit Colombia, this Visa V digital nomad category is not the route described on the Cancillería page.
- •Visa-exempt remote workers can also enter without this visa for up to 90 days (extendable toward 180 days in a calendar year) if Colombian companies do not pay them. That stay is not the same as a two-year Visa V.
- •You may add dependents of the main applicant when the ministry allows family filing.
- •Security or prior immigration issues can block approval even with strong income. Tell a lawyer early if that applies.
Confirm your passport on Colombia’s short-stay visa exemption list and the live Visa V checklist on Cancillería before you book an appointment.
