Slovakia is cheap for families compared with Vienna but not cheap on rent. The state also pays or subsidises several child costs that other countries leave to parents.

What does a family of four spend each month?

Planning bands for a household with two adults and two school-age children are about €2,400–3,600 in Bratislava and €1,700–2,600 in Košice. The Bratislava figure assumes a three-room flat in Ružinov, Nové Mesto, or Petržalka. The Košice figure assumes a similar flat in Terasa, Sever, or Juh.

Rent runs about €1,000–1,500 in Bratislava and €650–950 in Košice for three rooms. Utilities add €170–320 depending on season. Groceries for four are roughly €450–750, and transport is another €50–110 because children's fares are cheaper than adults'. Leisure, clothes, and school extras add the rest. Which child costs does Slovakia reduce?

Lunches. The state funds a lunch for children in the last year of kindergarten and in primary school, so the daily school meal is free or almost free in participating schools. Check that your school takes part, because it is the school that registers the child.

Kindergarten (materská škola) is municipal and fees are set locally, so they are modest compared with private options. Nurseries for under-threes (jasle) are scarce, particularly in Bratislava, and private ones cost much more. Ask early, because waiting lists are real. Enroll children in school explains the process.

Children are covered by public health insurance paid by the state, so doctor visits and most hospital care have no premium. Dental and private clinics are the exceptions. See Healthcare costs.

Parents may also receive a monthly child allowance (prídavok na dieťa) and, in some cases, parental allowance. Whether you qualify depends on your residence status and how long you have lived in Slovakia, so ask the Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family in your district.

What are the biggest family costs to watch?

International schools are the big line. Fees at international schools in Bratislava can reach several thousand euros per year per child, which can approach a second rent. If you can use Slovak public school with language support, you avoid most of that cost. International schools compares the options.

After-school clubs, music lessons, and ski or Tatras trips add up. Child fares on city transport are cheap, but weekend Tatras trips by car mean fuel, parking, and entry fees.

Common misconceptions

Slovak schooling is not free of extras. Lunches are funded in many cases, but books, trips, and clubs are often paid by parents.

Kindergarten is not guaranteed in every town. Bratislava districts regularly have more applicants than places.

Living in Košice does not mean access to fewer family services. Family costs are lower, but English-language schooling options are fewer than in the capital.

Summary

Plan about €2,400–3,600 a month for a family of four in Bratislava and €1,700–2,600 in Košice. Housing sets the total, while state-funded lunches and children's healthcare reduce the child side. International school fees can change the budget more than anything else, so decide the school route before you pick a flat. See Best for families for where families settle.
