Lithuanian pet entry is a veterinary and border process, not a casual airline add-on. Start the microchip and rabies calendar before your Vilnius deposit clears, then confirm the rental accepts pets: How to rent a home and Dog-friendly Lithuania.
What must be true before the flight?
Dogs, cats and ferrets need electronic identification (microchip), valid rabies vaccination with the required waiting period, and the correct travel document. From another EU country, that is usually an EU pet passport issued by an authorised veterinarian. From many non-EU origins, VMVT requires a veterinary health certificate, owner or authorised-person declarations, and for some risk countries a rabies antibody titration test. Young animals without valid rabies vaccination cannot use the simplified third-country pet route.
Non-commercial movement means the trip is not for sale or transfer of ownership. Pets should accompany the owner or a person with written authorisation. Documentary and identity checks happen at designated traveller entry points. Commercial movements and other species follow different veterinary-check rules: read the live VMVT checklist for your origin before you book.
What happens after arrival?
Register dogs, cats and ferrets brought into Lithuania in the national Pet Register (Gyvūnų augintinių registras) within 14 days of arrival. A local veterinarian or authorised registrar enters the microchip and owner data; owners remain responsible for correct registration. Keep vaccine records current and follow Vilnius leash, muzzle and JUDU transport gear rules: Dog-friendly Lithuania.
Vingis Park walks and Curonian Spit day trips work once paperwork and the lease agree. Finish human stay documents in parallel: Paperwork after moving and Apply for a residence permit.
Common misconceptions
Assuming an airline pet booking equals legal entry fails. Microchip-before-rabies order and the correct certificate still decide the border.
Assuming the EU pet passport alone finishes Lithuanian duties also fails. Domestic Pet Register entry within 14 days is a separate local obligation.
Summary
Chip before rabies, carry the EU passport or third-country health certificate VMVT lists for your origin, then register the pet in the Gyvūnų augintinių registras within 14 days. Write the animal into the lease before the crate leaves home.
