AMKA is the eleven-digit social security ID that employers, e-EFKA, and public health desks use to recognise you. Without it, Greek employment filings and many EOPYY pathways stall even if your AFM already exists.
Who can apply, and where?
Ministry of Labour guidance says AMKA is mandatory for people who work, are insured, or intend to work in Greece, and that KEP offices or e-EFKA branches issue it when documents are complete. Bring passport or national ID, your AFM evidence, and proof of Greek address such as a registered lease, host solemn declaration, or utility bill in an accepted form.
EU/EEA and Swiss citizens often proceed once AFM and address proof are ready. Third-country nationals commonly need a temporary or residence permit before AMKA is issued; finish stay paperwork in Apply for a residence permit if that is your route. Special international-protection paths may use different interim health identifiers; follow Migration Ministry instructions for that status rather than this general newcomer flow.
What order should you use with AFM and healthcare?
Get the AFM first. Secure address proof that a KEP clerk can recognise. Then book or walk into a KEP or e-EFKA desk for AMKA. After the number exists, enrol in public cover through employment or other entitlement rules: Enrol in public healthcare.
Employers often refuse to finalise contracts until AMKA and AFM both appear on paperwork. Keep digital tax access ready so lease acceptance and tax views work: Set up TAXISnet.
What documents fail at the counter?
Photocopies of unfinished AFM applications, hotel bookings, and Airbnb screenshots rarely replace a lease or host declaration. Greek-language forms still dominate many desks; bring a Greek-speaking helper if your Greek is thin. Call 1555 or check e-EFKA appointment routes when your local branch requires booking rather than walk-in.
Banks may ask for AMKA later for payroll products, but AFM remains the harder first gate for account opening: Open a bank account.
Common misconceptions
AMKA is not the AFM. One number does not substitute for the other.
An EHIC also does not create an AMKA. Tourist cover and resident social-security registration are different tools.
Summary
Collect AFM and address proof, then obtain AMKA at a KEP or e-EFKA office before you expect Greek payroll or public health enrolment to run smoothly.
Treat lawful stay as a prerequisite for many non-EU filings, and keep the printed AMKA certificate with your passport folder.
