Costa Rican tipping is a courtesy layer on top of a printed service line and VAT, not a second rent payment. Read the bill before you open the card machine: Café and dining culture.
What do restaurants and bars usually expect?
Many sit-down restaurants in San José, Escazú, and tourist corridors print a 10% service charge plus 13% IVA. Paying the service line is the local default when the meal went well; declining is possible but cooler when service was normal. You are not expected to add another 15–20% US-style tip on top of that printed 10%. An extra 5–10% for genuinely excellent service is appreciated, not mandatory: Groceries and eating out.
Sodas and casual lunch spots often run with softer tip rituals. Nightlife cover charges and drink minimums are separate from tipping: Nightlife. Festival chinamos and fairground stalls follow cash norms more than fine-dining theatre: Festival culture.
How do taxis, apps, hotels and beaches work?
Uber rides rarely require a cash tip; rounding or an in-app tip is optional. Hotel porters and housekeepers still appreciate small notes after help with bags, especially in Escazú and beach hotels: Living in Escazú and Living in Tamarindo. Tour guides and drivers often receive a modest thank-you after full-day trips. Beach chair and boat helpers may expect a small tip when they set you up: Beach culture.
Put service lines into the monthly eating-out sheet so Escalante dinners do not surprise you: How expensive is Costa Rica, Monthly budget, and Living in San José. Social meals still matter more than the tip maths: Social life.
Common misconceptions
Assuming menu prices equal the final bill fails. Service and IVA stack on top in many restaurants.
Assuming you must tip like a US city on top of the printed 10% also fails. The included service line is already the main courtesy.
Summary
Pay the printed 10% when service was fine, treat extra tips as optional thanks, and budget IVA on top of menu prices. Costa Rica rewards bill literacy more than tip theatre.
