What is festival culture like in Costa Rica in 2026?

Fiestas de Zapote occupy late December into early January at the Campo Ferial east of central San José. The signature is Costa Rica’s corrida style: bulls stay unharmed while improvisados dodge in the ring, with rides, chinamos snacks, and free evening concerts around the grounds: Living in San José and Live music culture. Expect heavy traffic; Uber or bus beats hunting parking.

Fiestas de Palmares, usually mid to late January in Alajuela province, draw national and international concert bills, the big tope horse parade, mountain-bike and running classics, and dense fairground nights. Book beds early if you stay nearby. El Tope Nacional along Paseo Colón in San José and countless municipal ferias keep the rest of the year loud: Holiday traditions and Nightlife.

Treat Zapote and Palmares as infrastructure events: closed streets, surge pricing, thin sleep, and higher dining bills with the usual service line: Tipping culture and Café and dining culture. Friendship densifies when you repeat the same feria circle rather than chase one tourist concert: Making friends. Protect recovery if you also work remote mornings: Work-life balance. Stadium and sports energy overlaps on festival weeks: Sports culture.
