UAE remote work visa still a popular Gulf base option

Remote workers can still apply for a one-year UAE remote work residence if they meet income, insurance, and employment proof rules.

Official source

The UAE remote work visa (often grouped with "virtual work" residence options) is still a straightforward way to live in Dubai or Abu Dhabi while keeping a foreign employer. It is not a freelance catch-all. You need to show remote employment or ownership with income at the published floor, valid insurance, and a passport with enough validity.

I see two repeat mistakes: applying with a tourist entry history that does not match the story, and underestimating health insurance limits that GDRFA actually accepts.

Basics that still matter in 2026

  • Income proof is usually monthly salary or business income translated into AED at the rate the portal uses.
  • Health cover must meet UAE requirements for the full visa period you request.
  • Housing may be asked as part of the in-country steps after initial approval.
  • Tax residency is a separate conversation. The visa solves stay permission, not where you owe tax.

Who should look elsewhere

If you need local UAE payroll or client work inside the Emirates, this is the wrong box. If you only want 30–60 days without paperwork, visit rules may be enough until you commit.

Next steps

  1. Read the current remote work section on u.ae.
  2. Compare income and lifestyle with Singapore on our UAE vs Singapore comparison if you are shopping Gulf vs Asia hubs.
  3. Use the UAE remote residency pathway on Country To Live as a planning checklist, then confirm fees on the live portal.

Friendly reminder: rules and fees differ between emirates and service channels. Check the live list before you pay anyone.
