Citizenship residency requirement extended to 10 years

Portugal tightened one of the biggest draws for long-term movers: how long you must live there before you can apply for citizenship. For most people who are not EU citizens, the clock just got longer.

President António José Seguro signed a revised nationality law in early May 2026. The headline change for many third-country holders is a move from five years of legal residency to ten years before naturalisation.
