New Zealand parent visa queue gets priority for long waiters
From 5 October 2026, New Zealand picks about 90% of Parent Resident Visa expressions of interest by wait date, and only 10% by ballot. Cap stays 2,500 a year.

New Zealand is changing how it picks Parent Resident Visa files. From 5 October 2026, most people in the pool will be chosen by how long they have waited, not by luck alone.

What changed
- Hybrid picking starts on 5 October 2026. About 90% of expressions of interest (EOIs) will be chosen by the date they entered the pool. About 10% will still be chosen by ballot. Immigration New Zealand announced the change on 8 August 2026.
- The yearly cap stays the same. New Zealand still plans up to 2,500 Parent Resident Visas a year.
- Last old ballot draw: 11 August 2026. First hybrid draw: 10 November 2026.
- Current EOIs mostly roll over. If your EOI is already in the pool, it should move into the new system. You usually do not need a brand-new EOI.
- EOIs stop auto-expiring every two years. You must confirm every two years that you still want to stay in the pool, and keep your details up to date. There is no extra fee for that.
- The queue is still long. As of 5 August 2026, Immigration New Zealand said there were 7,931 valid EOIs for 11,904 people. A longer wait helps, but it does not mean a fast invite.
What you still need
The rules for who can qualify did not go away:
- A New Zealand citizen or resident child who can sponsor you.
- Health and character checks.
- The usual relationship and sponsorship tests.
- A two-step process: first an EOI, then an invitation to apply (ITA), then a full residence file.
- Enough places under the 2,500 yearly limit.
This change is about who gets picked from the pool. It is not a new visa type.
Who this affects
- Parents who have waited for years under the old ballot system.
- Adult children in New Zealand who want parents to join them.
- New EOI applicants who still get a small ballot chance.
- Families comparing Australia, Canada, or the UK for parent reunion options.
What to do next
- Read Immigration New Zealand’s Parent Resident Visa changes page and the EOI selection process.
- If you already have an EOI, watch for transition emails and keep your contact details current.
- Open our New Zealand country page, then compare Australia vs New Zealand if your family is still choosing where to settle.
