Canada introduced temporary border measures tied to the Ebola outbreak risk in Central and East Africa. The key immigration impact is a 90-day suspension of immigration documents for residents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan.

Here is what the government says is in effect:

  • From May 27 at 23:59 EDT, approved TRV, eTA, and PR visa holders who are residents of the three listed countries cannot travel to Canada while documents are suspended.
  • The same 90-day window also pauses decisions on new applications for those documents from residents of those countries.
  • People already inside Canada are not removed by this measure and can continue their stay under their existing status conditions.
  • A separate health measure starts May 30 and requires a 21-day quarantine for travelers who were in affected areas in the last 21 days, including Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
  • The government says these steps are temporary and based on public health risk under the Quarantine Act framework.
