Spain climate score restored as late-summer storms break the heatwave streak
We raised Spain's climate rating by 0.3 points to 9.0/10 after Atlantic storms and cooler air replaced the peak summer heatwave that drove our July cut.
We raised Spain's climate score from 8.7 to 9.0 on Country To Live. In late August 2026, cooler Atlantic air and storms replaced the long heatwave stretch that fed July wildfires and our earlier cut, according to reporting on the cold-front shift across Spain.
This is an editorial score for people comparing countries on our site. It is not a promise that every Spanish summer will stay mild, and it does not erase wildfire risk in dry inland belts.

Why we changed the score
- The heatwave pattern broke. Unstable Atlantic air pushed storms and a clear temperature drop into eastern and northern Spain after days above 40C.
- Nights are more livable again. Fewer tropical nights above 20C inland make full-time housing feel closer to a normal Spanish summer again.
- Our July cut was a peak-season shock. We had marked extreme heat and deadly Andalusia fires. That emergency week is no longer the whole year-round climate story for movers.
- We restored the full 0.3. Spain returns to 9.0/10, the level before the July update. Other Spain scores stay put this round.
What the number means on our site
Climate on Country To Live measures how appealing year-round weather and seasons tend to be for someone living there full time, not visiting for a holiday week. A 9.0/10 puts Spain back in a top climate band for comparers.
Peers such as Portugal, France, and Italy share Mediterranean summer risk. Open the Spain country page for the full scorecard, run Portugal vs Spain, or put Spain in our compare tool. Browse all country scores to see where this update lands.
Before you plan a move
- Treat July and August as the stress months. Shoulder seasons still look strong; pack cooling into any inland lease plan.
- Check local fire history if you want rural Andalusia or the east. A restored score is not a wildfire clearance.
- Pair climate with budget. Use our cost of living calculator and the Spain country page before you shortlist cities.
We will publish another update if a new nationwide heat or fire emergency reshapes year-round living again.
