Greece cost of living score cut after September energy inflation jump
We cut Greece's cost of living score by 0.4 points to 7.4/10 after Eurostat's September flash put annual inflation at 5.1%, with energy at 18.8% in the euro area.
We lowered Greece's cost of living score from 7.8 to 7.4. Eurostat's flash estimate on 2 October 2026 puts Greek annual inflation at 5.1% in September, up from 3.7% in August. The same release says euro-area energy inflation is 18.8%, up from 14.3%. Food, alcohol, and tobacco are only 1.4%.
This is a data call for people comparing monthly bills. It is not advice to leave Greece, and it is not a forecast of next winter's power bill.

What the September flash shows
- Greece's annual rate jumped in one month. Eurostat marks the September figure as a flash estimate: 5.1%, after 3.7% in August and 2.7% in July. A year earlier, September 2025 was 1.8%.
- The month itself was steep. The same table shows a 1.8% rise from August to September. That is the price change inside the month, not the year-over-year rate.
- Energy is the euro-area driver. Energy is expected at 18.8% year over year, versus 14.3% in August. Services are 3.2%. Non-energy goods are 1.1%. This is not a grocery shock.
- Neighbors moved too, but not by the same step. Spain's flash is 5.0% (from 4.6%). Italy's is 4.1% (from 3.2%). Portugal stayed at 3.6%. Greece's one-month step is the sharp one in that set.
- The full index is not out yet. Eurostat says the complete September HICP set is scheduled for 16 October 2026. We cut 0.4, not more, because this is still a flash print.
How 7.4 sits next to peers
On Country To Live, a higher cost of living score means day-to-day spend is easier, not that the economy is stronger. Greece now sits at 7.4. Spain is still 7.8 on the same score. Portugal is 8.5. Italy is 7.2.
Rent is a separate score. We did not touch housing. Open Greece for the full set, then line the three up in Compare. The wider board is on all countries.
If power and fuel are your swing factor
- Put your real electricity and fuel spend into the cost of living calculator before you treat 7.4 as your budget.
- Read Greece vs Spain and Greece vs Portugal if the south of Europe is the shortlist. Portugal's flash inflation did not move in September.
- Check the 16 October Eurostat release. If the full index confirms a higher energy print, we can move this score again.
We will update the number if the full September data, or a later month, shows the energy jump fading or sticking.
