France climate score restored as heat alerts ease and cooler spells return

We raised France's climate score from 7.5 to 8.0 on Country To Live. By late August 2026, heatwave alerts had eased outside the south-east and cooler nights plus stormy spells replaced the July firestorm weeks that drove our cut, according to Connexion France coverage of the heatwave easing.

This is an editorial score for people comparing countries on our site. It is not a claim that drought or fire risk is over in the southwest.

Why we changed the score

• Peak canicule pressure eased. Heat alerts lifted across much of France as night-time temperatures cooled and the intense heat-dome pattern faded.
• Storms and rain returned to the map. Forecast rain and storms across large parts of the country mark a break from the tinder-dry July stretch that fed Gironde fires.
• The July cut tracked a crisis week. Mass evacuations and a huge burn scar were a mover-relevant shock. Year-round living in France is not only that July week.
• We restored the full 0.5. France returns to 8.0/10. Other France scores stay put this round.

What the number means on our site

Climate on Country To Live measures how appealing year-round weather and seasons tend to be for someone living there full time, not visiting for a holiday week. An 8.0/10 puts France back where it sat before the Gironde update.
