Sweden
Sweden residence permit (self-sufficient / own funds)
Sweden does not offer one simple “financial visa” for every passport. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens usually register when they can support themselves. Many others need a listed ground such as long-term EU residence elsewhere and pension-level funds. You must show maintenance, housing, and health cover.
Key requirements
We use about USD 2,500 monthly and USD 55,000 savings as planning anchors from published maintenance and secured-living examples. Your household size and rent level change the real number.

How to live in Sweden on your own money
You must show you can pay living costs in Sweden, arrange housing and health cover, and apply for the permit type that fits your citizenship (EU free movement, EU long-term resident, or another Migrationsverket track).
Before you start
Check your citizenship path
EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens usually register with the Swedish Tax Agency. Many non-EU citizens need a specific permit ground such as long-term EU status elsewhere.
Budget for high living costs
Migrationsverket maintenance tables assume rent, tax, and daily costs in Sweden. Savings in a cheaper country may not be enough on paper.
Sweden does not offer a simple “retire here” permit for every passport. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens register differently from most non-EU nationals.
You can prepare bank letters and insurance abroad, but biometrics and decisions follow Migrationsverket’s timeline.
- 1
Choose the correct permit ground
Read Migrationsverket pages for your situation: EU registration, long-term EU resident moving on pension, or other listed grounds.
- 2
Meet maintenance requirements
Show monthly income after housing or assets that cover living costs for your household (published SEK tables, often several thousand kronor per month for adults).
- 3
Arrange health insurance
Get cover for illness care in Sweden until you join the public system if you qualify later.
- 4
Secure housing in Sweden
Sign a lease or prove ownership. Maintenance calculations usually subtract rent from income tests.
- 5
Apply online or on paper
File through Migrationsverket with passport, proof of funds, insurance, and housing. Pay the application fee.
- 6
Give biometrics if asked
Visit an embassy or migration center when instructed to provide fingerprints and photos.
- 7
Wait for the decision
Processing times vary by permit type. Do not move until rules for your nationality allow it.
- 8
Register after arrival
Complete population registration and tax steps once you are lawfully living in Sweden.
- 9
Renew with updated proof
Keep showing income or assets on extensions. Permanent residence has separate time and income rules.
- 10
Plan permanent stay separately
Permanent residence and citizenship need long lawful stay, language, and income tests beyond the first permit.
This is general information, not legal advice. Swedish maintenance amounts and permit grounds change. Confirm on migrationsverket.se before you move.

Citizenship & nationality
The clearest “live on your own money” paths depend on citizenship. Non-EU nationals without EU long-term status often cannot use a generic savings permit like Portugal’s D7.
- •EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens generally register with proof they will not need Swedish welfare.
- •Long-term residents of another EU country may apply to move to Sweden on pension or similar own funds.
- •Maintenance tests look at income after rent or assets that cover living costs for about two years.
- •Comprehensive health insurance is required until you are covered another way.
- •Permanent residence and citizenship need long lawful stay, Swedish language, and separate income rules.
Use Migrationsverket’s site to match your citizenship to the correct permit before you sign a lease in Sweden.
What our quiz assumes
Open to most nationalities in our quiz
We do not list passport exclusions for this route yet. Always check official rules for your country.
Best for
- •Passive or stable recurring income from pensions, rent, or dividends
- •People planning to stay several years with a clear residence record
Long-term path
- Permanent residence: Possible, but depends on your case
- Citizenship: Possible, but depends on your case
Time on a self-funded permit counts toward long-term EU status or permanent residence only if your permit type allows it. Check the label on your decision.
Practical difficulty
hard
Rough guide only. Your case depends on papers, timing, and rule changes.
Hard because permit grounds are limited for non-EU passports and living costs are high, not because the online form is long.

Use these government pages for fees, forms, and the latest rules.
Note
Do not assume remote salary from abroad qualifies unless your permit type explicitly allows it. Compare EU registration, EU long-term mover rules, and work permits first.
