How to get Malta’s Nomad Residence Permit
Prove remote work for employers or clients outside Malta, meet the annual gross income minimum, submit a complete application, then complete permit and card steps.
Before you start
For people who are not EU, EEA, or Swiss
EU citizens use free-movement rules. This permit is for others who work remotely for companies or clients outside Malta.
Keep income proof consistent
Bank statements, contracts, employer letters, and tax papers should all tell the same story about your annual gross income.
This permit is not the same as Malta’s investment permanent residence programme.
Income is set as a gross annual euro amount (often cited around EUR 42,000 in recent policy). Confirm the current figure and accepted proof with official Malta channels.
Document and background-check rules can change. Use the official portal checklist and latest fee notices before you apply.
- 1
Confirm you qualify for NRP
Check you are not an EU citizen using free movement, your work is remote, and your application route matches where you legally live.
- 2
Prove remote work abroad
Collect employment contracts or client agreements showing you work online for non-Maltese employers or clients.
- 3
Document annual gross income
Prepare bank statements, payroll or invoices, and letters showing income at or above the published NRP minimum.
- •Add a simple yearly summary that links monthly deposits to the gross minimum.
- 4
Secure housing in Malta
Provide a lease, booking, or host letter that meets NRP rules for your stay period.
- 5
Buy health insurance
Get a policy with coverage terms accepted for the full permit period you are requesting.
- 6
Get police and civil records
Prepare criminal record and related documents with legalisation and translation where required.
- 7
Submit application and fees
File the complete pack through the official channel, including dependants if applicable, and keep all receipts.
- 8
Answer background-check questions
Reply quickly to requests about income consistency and past immigration history.
- 9
Complete permit and card steps
After approval, finish identity and card formalities and confirm validity dates and conditions.
- 10
Renew while you still qualify
Keep working remotely for foreign entities and refresh income proof for each renewal.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Malta NRP criteria, thresholds, and vetting steps can change. Check with official Malta authorities before you apply.

Citizenship & nationality
The NRP is for people who are not EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens and already work remotely with income from outside Malta. EU citizens live in Malta under free movement and do not use the NRP.
- •You need a valid passport, proof of where you will live, and recent bank statements that match the income amount published by Residency Malta.
- •Malta decides tax residence separately from immigration. Holding the NRP does not tell you your full tax situation.
- •You can usually add dependents with extra documents. Some fees and checks apply to each person.
- •A past visa refusal in Schengen or the UK can slow approval even with strong income. Tell a lawyer early if that applies.
Use the official nomad residence permit portal and Residency Malta updates for the current form, fees, and income proof rules.

Best for
- •Remote workers looking for a formal digital nomad visa
- •Remote employment or freelance income from outside the host country
Long-term path
- Permanent residence: Possible, but depends on your case
- Citizenship: Possible, but depends on your case
You can renew the NRP while you still qualify. It is not the same as Malta’s permanent residence investment programs. Long-term settlement and citizenship use different legal paths.
Practical difficulty
medium
Rough guide only. Your case depends on papers, timing, and rule changes.
Rated medium because rules are published clearly, but you still face background checks and must prove steady remote income.
