Citizenship & nationality

The NRP is aimed at third-country nationals who already work remotely and can prove income from outside Malta. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens do not apply for the NRP to live in Malta — they use EU free movement instead.

  • You need a valid travel document, proof of accommodation, and recent bank statements that align with the income threshold published by Residency Malta.
  • Malta runs tax residence and remittance rules separately from immigration approval — holding the NRP does not automatically describe your full tax position.
  • Dependants can usually be included with extra documentation; some fees and checks are per person.
  • Prior refusals in Schengen or the UK can complicate vetting even when income is strong — disclose issues early with counsel.

Use the official Nomad Residence Permit portal and Residency Malta communications for the current application form, fee schedule, and income evidence rules.

How our tool models it

Broad nationality access (in our model)

We do not model specific exclusions for this pathway yet. Always confirm with official guidance.

Best for

  • Remote workers who want a clear digital-nomad-style pathway
  • Remote employment or freelance income from outside the host country

Long-term path

  • Permanent residence: Limited / case-by-case
  • Citizenship: Limited / case-by-case

The NRP is renewable while you remain eligible, but it is not the same track as Malta’s permanent residence investment programmes — long-term settlement and citizenship follow different legal routes.

Practical difficulty

Medium reflects clear published criteria plus background checks and the need for consistent, verifiable remote-income evidence.
