How to get Lithuania’s remote-worker residence permit

Apply through the MIGRIS system when you work remotely for a foreign employer, meet salary or experience rules, and will not work for Lithuanian clients without the right permit.

Before you start

  • Work stays outside Lithuania

Your job must be with a company registered abroad. Earning money from Lithuanian customers usually needs a different permit.

  • Employer must be in good standing

The company should have operated lawfully for at least six months and have no serious immigration or tax violations on record.

Your foreign employer must commit to at least six months of full-time remote work. Salary floors follow Lithuanian average wage statistics and can change each year.

Standard MIGRIS fees are about EUR 80 with roughly two-month decisions, or EUR 320 for faster handling. Book biometrics after online filing.

  1. 1

    Confirm remote-work rules

Check that your contract is full-time, at least six months, and with a foreign employer that meets current migration rules.

  2. 2

    Meet salary or experience test

Show either relevant work experience in the last three years or monthly pay at least about EUR 2,013 (2025–2026 level, updates with statistics).

  3. 3

    Prepare employment contract

Collect a signed contract stating remote work, duties, salary, and duration. Add employer registration proof abroad.

  4. 4

    Gather employer compliance papers

Provide tax clearance or statements showing the employer has no outstanding Lithuanian tax debts if officers request them.

  5. 5

    Prepare personal documents

Get passport copies, photos, insurance, housing proof, and police certificates with translation where required.

  6. 6

    Submit MIGRIS application

Create the temporary residence application online, upload scans, and pay the stated fee.

  7. 7

    Attend biometrics appointment

Visit the Migration Department or VFS center to give fingerprints and originals as instructed.

  8. 8

    Receive permit decision

Wait for approval, then collect your residence card and note the validity period (often up to two years).

  9. 9

    Complete arrival steps

Register address and follow any reporting rules after you move to Lithuania.

  10. 10

    Plan renewal or employer change

Renew before expiry. Changing employers early may require six months with the first employer under 2025 rules.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Lithuanian salary thresholds, employer checks, and MIGRIS procedures change. Confirm on migracija.lt before you apply.

Citizenship & nationality

This permit is for remote employees of companies registered outside Lithuania. It is not a generic digital nomad stamp for freelancers serving clients worldwide without a clear foreign employer.

  • Your employer must commit to at least six months of full-time remote work under current migration rules.
  • You usually need either one year of relevant experience in the last three years or monthly pay at about EUR 2,013 (figure updates with national averages).
  • Highly qualified roles can face higher salary multiples. Check the latest Migration Department guidance.
  • The foreign employer should have operated lawfully for at least six months and stay clear of serious immigration or tax violations.
  • Working for Lithuanian customers or switching employers early can trigger extra rules, including a six-month wait before a change of employer under 2025 updates.
  • Staying more than 183 days in a calendar year can make you a Lithuanian tax resident. Plan taxes separately from immigration.

Use the Migration Department (migracija.lt) and MIGRIS portal for the current checklist and salary tables before you resign from your home country job.
