Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein residence permit (financial self-sufficiency)

Liechtenstein allows some people to live without a local job if they can pay their own way, hold proper health insurance, and (for most non-EU passports) show the country will benefit from their stay. Costs are very high and slots are limited.

How to live in Liechtenstein on your own funds

You need enough money to live without welfare, Swiss-style health insurance, housing, and (for most non-EU passports) a reason Liechtenstein considers in the national interest.

Before you start

  • Confirm you will not work locally

This route is for living on foreign pension, investments, or savings. Taking a local job usually requires a work permit instead.

  • Budget for Swiss-level costs

Rent, insurance, and daily spending are among the highest in Europe. Bank letters should show long-term liquidity, not a short tourist budget.

Liechtenstein is small and selective. EEA and Swiss citizens face lighter rules than most other passports.

Work with the Migration and Passport Office early. Commune registration and Swiss border rules interact with your permit.

  1. 1

    Check EEA or third-country rules

EEA and Swiss nationals register with proof of means and insurance. Other passports need extra national-interest review.

  2. 2

    Prove financial self-sufficiency

Show pensions, dividends, or savings that cover Liechtenstein living costs without social assistance.

  3. 3

    Buy comprehensive health insurance

Obtain coverage that meets Liechtenstein and cross-border care rules for your entire stay.

  4. 4

    Secure housing in Liechtenstein

Sign a lease or prove ownership suitable for commune registration.

  5. 5

    Collect police certificates

Order criminal records from countries where you lived recently and translate them if required.

  6. 6

    Apply to the Migration Office

Submit your file to the Ausländer- und Passamt with fees, photos, and supporting letters.

  7. 7

    Register with your commune

After approval, complete local registration steps in your municipality.

  8. 8

    Receive your residence permit

Permit length differs by nationality (often longer for EEA or Swiss citizens than for others).

  9. 9

    Renew with fresh proof

Show continued funds and insurance on renewal. Report address or family changes promptly.

  10. 10

    Plan long-term status carefully

Citizenship is rare and slow. Treat Liechtenstein as a long but limited stay unless you have a clear legal path forward.

This is general information, not legal advice. Liechtenstein quotas and national-interest tests are strict. Confirm on llv.li migration pages before you apply.

Citizenship & nationality

EEA and Swiss citizens can often register with proof of means and insurance. Other passports face national-interest review and shorter permit lengths.

  • You must show you will not need Liechtenstein social assistance.
  • Health insurance must cover risks in Liechtenstein and cross-border care as rules require.
  • Secure housing before commune registration.
  • People who are not from the EU, EEA, or Switzerland must usually show the stay is in Liechtenstein’s interest, not only that they have money.
  • Citizenship is rare and takes many years of lawful residence and integration.

Read the Ausländer- und Passamt pages on llv.li and confirm commune steps before you rent or move goods across the border.
