How to get Ireland Stamp 0 on independent means

Show steady passive income and private health insurance, apply to Irish immigration for permission, then complete visa and registration steps. You cannot work in Ireland on this stamp.

Before you start

  • No work or business in Ireland

Stamp 0 is for living on your own funds, not for employment, self-employment, or running a business unless immigration agrees in writing.

Do not mix this application with work permit routes such as Stamp 1.

  • Prepare clear euro financial proof

Immigration expects tables of recurring income, proof of savings you can access, and certified documents that show you can support yourself long term.

Stamp 0 is decided case by case. You usually need high recurring income plus savings and full private health cover. It often does not count the same way as work stamps toward citizenship.

Stamp 0 rules can change with policy updates. Start from the current Irish immigration guidance before you collect financial papers.

  1. 1

Confirm Stamp 0 fits your case

Check you are applying under independent means, not another Stamp 0 category with different rules.

  2. 2

    Gather passive income proof

Collect pension, dividend, rental, or annuity records that show stable yearly income in a clear format.

    • Use summary tables that match your underlying bank statements and certificates.
  3. 3

    Show savings you can use

Provide bank and asset statements showing money you can access beyond your monthly income.

  4. 4

    Buy private health insurance

Get comprehensive private medical cover for the full period you are asking to stay.

  5. 5

    Prepare housing documents

Provide accommodation proof and any declarations that match your timeline and application story.

  6. 6

    Get police and civil records

Collect background and civil status papers with certification, translation, and legalisation where asked.

  7. 7

    Submit your Stamp 0 request

Send a complete application to Irish immigration and reply quickly to any clarification requests.

  8. 8

Get an entry visa if you need one

After permission is granted, complete any visa sticker process required for your passport before travel.

  9. 9

    Register after arrival

Complete registration and keep copies of your permission and its conditions.

  10. 10

    Renew with up-to-date proof

For each renewal, show you still do not work in Ireland and still have insurance and enough income.

This is general information, not legal advice. Irish Stamp 0 policy is discretionary and can change. Check official immigration sources before you apply.

Citizenship & nationality

Stamp 0 is not one simple retirement visa. ISD grants it only when policy fits: independent means, elderly dependents, visiting academics, and a few other narrow cases each need different proof.

  • For independent-means retirees, guides often cite about €50,000 yearly income for one person and €100,000 for a couple, plus liquid backup savings. Lump sums count as part of the full picture, not a side note.
  • You must keep full private health insurance. Stamp 0 does not give you public healthcare in Ireland.
  • Jobs, self-employment, and business in Ireland are usually not allowed unless ISD approves something else in writing.
  • Financial files are often expected in clear euro tables and may need certification ISD accepts. Messy PDFs slow decisions.

Comments on Ireland Stamp 0 (independent means / retiree-style)

wanderframe

I’ve been looking into Ireland Stamp 0 and still a bit confused. Is it actually realistic for someone who isn’t fully retired yet? Like if I have savings + some passive income, would that be enough or is it mostly for older applicants?

  • Noah WalkerCountry To Live

Hey! Stamp 0 is not strictly for retirees, but it is mainly for people who can support themselves without working in Ireland. If your savings and passive income are stable and well-documented, it can be realistic. However, younger applicants are usually reviewed more carefully.
