Where do American expats live in Vietnam in 2026?

Ho Chi Minh City supports American-linked work in technology, manufacturing, logistics, finance, consumer business, healthcare, education, and professional services. AmCham Vietnam, the American chamber of commerce and business association, has its headquarters there and serves members nationally. The US Consulate General and American Center add official and education-related institutions, but neither is a general social club.

District 1, District 7, and Thảo Điền remain familiar area names rather than current administrative units after Vietnam ended district-level government in 2025. Central commercial work, school campuses, and factories on the former Binh Duong side of expanded Ho Chi Minh City point toward different homes. An American family should let the school and job commute decide, not an old "expat district" label.

Hanoi is the stronger base for the US Embassy, diplomacy, government-facing organisations, universities, development work, education, and oversight of northern industry. AmCham Vietnam maintains a Hanoi office. EducationUSA, the US government advising network for study in the United States, operates in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and holds public education activity, but its purpose is educational advising rather than expat settlement.

Tây Hồ, Cầu Giấy, and Nam Từ Liêm are familiar Hanoi area names, not current district governments. A home near West Lake may support embassy and school routines, while work toward Nội Bài airport, Bac Ninh, or Hai Phong can make an eastern or northern route more practical.

Da Nang has a smaller American-linked network around technology, tourism, education, hospitality, central-region business, and family lifestyle. Its airport and manageable scale help repeat contact, but specialised employers, school alternatives, and advanced healthcare are thinner than in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

Hoi An is now within expanded Da Nang following the 2025 merger with former Quang Nam. Its hospitality and remote-work circles can be easy to enter but have more visitor turnover. Nha Trang supports tourism, marine, education, and service work around a separate coastal routine. Neither city should be chosen on the assumption that an English-speaking online group replaces a local career or medical network.

Americans have no special Vietnam residence route. An electronic visa is an entry and temporary-stay document. It does not create permission to take local work, and Vietnam has no generic digital-nomad residence route. A work permit is official permission for an eligible foreigner to work in a qualifying arrangement; longer residence documents require their own legal basis.

US citizens abroad can retain US federal tax filing duties, while Vietnam may also tax income under its rules. City choice does not settle tax residence, employer withholding, social insurance, or business-registration questions. Use the US Internal Revenue Service guidance and qualified Vietnam advice for the actual household and work arrangement.

Before leasing, map an appropriate hospital, insurer network, school, airport route, and workplace. Ho Chi Minh City gives the widest private healthcare and school choice. Hanoi offers strong options with different air, winter, and commute concerns. Da Nang provides fewer backups, while Hoi An and Nha Trang may require referral travel.
