Is Istanbul or Ankara better to live in 2026?

Choose Istanbul for banking, finance, technology, media, trade, logistics and regional corporate roles. Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen Airport widen international options, although the wrong-side airport trip can dominate a travel day. Social and professional networks are deeper, but spread across a vast city.

Choose Ankara for ministries, embassies, defence and aerospace, universities, research and companies selling to public institutions. Esenboğa Airport has fewer global options than Istanbul's two-airport system, yet Ankara's central position and high-speed rail help with domestic travel.

Istanbul feels outward-facing and fast, with late social life across European and Asian centres. Ankara's social geography clusters more around Çankaya, Kavaklıdere, Bahçelievler and newer western areas. Neither city guarantees English-first daily services; Turkish becomes important with landlords, schools, clinics and public offices.

In Istanbul, the Bosphorus is a daily constraint. Marmaray, the suburban railway running beneath the Bosphorus, can make a cross-continent commute workable. Metro, ferries and metrobüs, a bus rapid-transit corridor, support other routes, but bridge traffic can defeat a cheap home far from work.

Ankara has a more planned inland form. Ankara Metro serves western and northern corridors, while ANKARAY, the city's light-rail line, links the intercity bus terminal axis with Kızılay and Dikimevi. Homes in Çayyolu, Ümitköy or Batıkent can offer more space, yet the exact office or school connection still matters.

Istanbul offers historic apartments, towers and a site (managed residential compound). Ankara has central apartments and large western compounds. In either city, ask what the aidat (monthly building or compound charge) covers, test heating and cooling, and listen at commute and sleeping hours.

Istanbul has humid summers, wet and windy winter spells, coastal exposure and difficult cross-city air patterns. Ankara has colder nights and winters, drier summer heat and more heating demand. Families get broad school and specialist-care choice in both cities, but Istanbul has more international options and more punishing school journeys.

Earthquake due diligence is address and building specific. AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency) says its seismic hazard map is not a risk map for an individual building. In Istanbul and Ankara, review ground conditions, construction and alteration records, emergency access and professional engineering evidence rather than calling either whole city safe.

Before a deposit, check the exact mahalle (neighbourhood) and application basis with Göç İdaresi (Presidency of Migration Management). Istanbul has specific restrictions that can affect new foreign residence applications. A rental contract is not approval for an ikamet izni (residence permit).
