Most international movers to German-speaking Switzerland land at Zurich Airport (ZRH), not at Zürich HB. The road is only about 10 kilometres, but a 01:30 landing with jet lag and luggage is a different problem from a noon S-Bahn selfie.
This page is the late-arrival hop. First-week housing sits on Short-term housing for newcomers.
What still runs after midnight?
Zürich Tourism says trains run daily from the airport to Zürich Main Station every 5–10 minutes between about 05:00 and midnight, with a 10–15 minute ride and about CHF 7 for a single adult ticket (children about CHF 3.50). Tram line 10 covers the same ticket band in about 35 minutes. A Zürich Card can make that airport hop free during its validity window.
ZVV marks night buses and night S-Bahn with an “N” and concentrates them on Friday and Saturday nights. Check the live ZVV timetable for your exact date. On many Sunday–Thursday nights, public options thin out after the last train until early morning. Taxis remain the fallback; tourism cites about CHF 45–70 for a 10–20 minute ride into the centre.
When to pre-book the door
Use the train when you land before the last departure, travel light, and your first night is near HB, Oerlikon, or another S-Bahn stop: Living in Zurich and Living in Switzerland without a car. Pre-book a car when you carry family luggage, land deep after midnight on a weeknight, or need a specific street without hoping the taxi rank still has vans. If a late ZRH arrival would strand you before your first Zurich check-in, a pre-booked airport pickup in Zurich meets you at Arrivals with the neighbourhood named in advance.
Geneva movers still use a different airport story: Living in Geneva. Buy a local SIM early so the driver and landlord can reach you: Get a mobile phone in Switzerland.
Common misconceptions
Assuming tram 10 runs all night like the daytime S-Bahn fails after the evening schedule ends.
Assuming every late ZRH arrival has a Friday-style night bus also fails on Sunday–Thursday landings.
Summary
Take the train when it still runs. Pre-book or take a taxi when you land after the last S-Bahn on a thin night network, then settle the first week of housing and ZVV tickets once you sleep.
