Most international movers to Mexico City land at AICM, not at a quiet suburban strip. Daytime Metrobús and Metro work. A 01:00 landing with jet lag and two suitcases is a different problem.
This page is the late-arrival hop. First-week housing sits on Short-term housing for newcomers.
What still runs after midnight?
AICM lists Metrobús Line 4 boarding at Terminal 1 door 7 and Terminal 2 door 2, with service every day and hours roughly 04:30–24:00 Monday to Saturday (05:00–24:00 Sundays and holidays). City guidance prices the airport Metrobús hop around MXN 30 on the integrated mobility card. Metro near Terminal 1 also winds down around midnight on most days.
After those close, authorized taxis sold at booths inside the terminals remain the official 24-hour option. CDMX and AICM both warn against accepting rides from people who approach you in Arrivals. Ride-hail apps operate legally but often meet outside specific doors because of federal airport rules: Living in Mexico City.
When a pre-booked car is the calmer choice
Use Metrobús when you travel light, land before midnight, and can finish on another line toward Roma, Condesa, or the Centro. Use the authorized taxi booth when you want a fixed zone fare without pre-booking. Pre-book a car when you carry family luggage, land after Metrobús closes, or need a specific street in Polanco or Coyoacán without negotiating the arrivals hall.
If a late AICM arrival would strand you before your first CDMX check-in, a pre-booked airport pickup in Mexico City meets you at Arrivals with the neighbourhood named in advance.
Phone data for maps helps once you clear immigration: Get a mobile phone. Neighbourhood choice still drives whether you need a second hop after the airport: Where to live in Mexico.
Common misconceptions
Assuming Metro runs all night fails. Plan around the midnight cutoff.
Assuming every person with a laminated sign is an authorized taxi also fails. Buy at the official booth or book ahead.
Summary
Ride Metrobús Line 4 while it runs, then authorized terminal taxis after midnight, and pre-book when luggage or a thin public window makes Arrivals risky.
Treat the hop as day-zero relocation work, not an optional tourist transfer.
