Regional Italian accents are not separate languages, and they are not the same decision as learning Neapolitan, Sicilian, Sardinian or other regional languages. Learn clear Standard Italian first for nationwide mobility, then adapt your listening to the place you actually live. For minority and regional languages themselves, see Standard Italian vs regional languages.
What should you learn first?
Administration, school messages, national news, CILS or CELI exams and most professional writing use Standard Italian. A Questura, comune, rental contract and ASL letter will not switch into thick local speech for your convenience. Course and exam routes: Learn Italian and Italian language requirements.
Your own accent can remain American, British, Romanian, German or southern Italian while your grammar and vocabulary stay nationally usable. Copying a forced RAI news voice is less useful than understanding fast local speech at the bakery, school gate and office.
How do regional accents differ for movers?
Milan and Turin northern speech can sound flatter and faster to learners trained on textbook CDs. Rome brings distinctive Roman intonation in everyday chat. Naples and Palermo may mix Standard Italian with strong local colour; ask people to switch to more standard forms when needed. Florence and Tuscany shaped much of literary Italian, yet street speech still has local rhythm.
Workplace Italian for clients still needs clear Standard forms: Italian for work. Bureaucracy stays Standard on paper even when the clerk’s spoken accent is local: Bureaucracy without Italian.
Common misconceptions
Assuming you must erase your foreign accent fails. Clarity and grammar matter more than sounding Roman.
Assuming a Neapolitan film equals the language of your lease also fails. Contracts and exams use Standard Italian.
Summary
Master Standard Italian for desks and certificates, then train your ear on the city you chose. Treat strong dialects and regional languages as optional culture, not as a substitute for national Italian.
