Rain reaches Germany throughout the year through Atlantic weather systems, summer thunderstorms, and uplift over mountains. The number of gray days, total rainfall, and flood risk are separate questions.
Which German regions are wettest?
Moist air rises over the Black Forest, Alps, Harz, and other uplands, so windward slopes receive much more precipitation than sheltered lowlands. Southern Bavaria can combine heavy rain with snowmelt risk, while the northern Black Forest is notably wet.
Western Germany is more exposed to Atlantic systems than the east. North Rhine-Westphalia can have frequent cloud and rain, especially near uplands such as the Sauerland.
The North Sea coast is windy and changeable, but Hamburg's reputation for constant rain should not be treated as a national maximum. Coastal drizzle and frequent showers can feel wetter than the total suggests.
Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, and areas in the rain shadow north and east of the Harz are among Germany's drier zones. Dry annual conditions do not remove short, intense storm risk.
When does rain fall?
Atlantic fronts bring rain and showers in all seasons, especially to western and northern Germany. Winter precipitation in the lowlands frequently falls as rain or sleet rather than stable snow.
Summer rain can arrive through thunderstorms. A short storm may overwhelm drainage even in a relatively dry city such as Berlin or Magdeburg.
The Alps and nearby southern areas can receive prolonged rain when moist air is held against the terrain. Rhine, Elbe, Danube, and smaller-river flooding depends on rainfall across whole catchments, not only weather at one address.
What should you check before renting or buying?
Use the federal Hinweiskarte Starkregengefahren, the heavy-rain hazard information map, for an initial view of possible surface-water depth and flow direction. Then check the state or municipality's detailed flood and heavy-rain maps.
Look for a basement entrance below street level, a garage ramp sloping toward the building, water marks, a ground-floor flat beside a stream, or a courtyard with no visible drainage.
Ask how cellar storage is insured and whether previous water damage was repaired. Standard household or building insurance may not cover every natural hazard without an additional element.
Frequent indoor mould does not prove that the region is exceptionally rainy. Leaks, thermal bridges, cold walls, and ventilation can create a building-specific problem.
Common misconceptions
Hamburg is not automatically Germany's rainiest place because mountain uplift creates much wetter zones.
A dry eastern climate does not protect one street from a severe thunderstorm or blocked drain.
Summary
Choose eastern lowlands for a drier overall pattern, while expecting more precipitation near western and southern uplands.
For a home decision, combine regional climate with river, surface-runoff, basement, drainage, and insurance checks at the exact address.
