September housing pressure in France is real for students. Crous beds, private halls, and shared rooms in Paris, Lyon, Toulouse, Lille, and Rennes move on calendars, not last-minute WhatsApp hope.
Where should you look first?
Start with Crous (Centres régionaux des œuvres universitaires et scolaires). Create or update your Dossier social étudiant on messervices.etudiant.gouv.fr and tick the housing request before the late-May cut-off used for the main allocation wave. The main phase prioritises boursiers and is not the usual door for international students. From early July, the complementary phase on trouverunlogement.lescrous.fr opens remaining rooms to a wider group, including internationals; vacancies keep appearing through summer as people cancel, so check often rather than waiting for a list.
Ask your faculty housing office about campus-linked halls as well. For private rooms, use Lokaviz (the Crous-linked private listing site) and ordinary agency or owner ads near metro, tram, or TER routes into your faculty. A private chambre or colocation still needs a written bail, inventory, and lawful deposit: How to rent a home and Furnished rentals. City rent pressure differs sharply: Rent in France.
What paperwork and scam checks matter?
If Crous assigns a room, confirm inside the short acceptance window and pay the reservation fee that is later deducted from first rent. For private stock, young renters under 30 can often use Visale as a free rental guarantee when the owner accepts it: Rent without a guarantor. Eligible households may later claim CAF housing benefit once the lease and address evidence are live: Apply for housing benefit.
Never transfer a deposit for an unseen Paris or Lyon room to an overseas account. Demand a video walk-through, matching owner or agency identity, and a French IBAN name that fits the contract. The same checks as Avoid rental scams apply. If you only need arrival weeks before term, use a deliberate bridge stay rather than a fake “reservation”: Short-term housing for newcomers. International cohort tips sit in International students community.
Common misconceptions
A university acceptance letter does not reserve a Crous bed. Residences still run their own phases and social ranking.
Skipping the DSE housing tick and hoping for a September miracle fails for grant-priority rooms. Internationals should plan on the complementary wave plus private stock.
Summary
Treat French student housing as a calendar: DSE and Crous first, complementary wave for wider access, then Lokaviz and private leases with Visale and CAF where they fit. Arrive early enough for in-person viewings in tight cities and keep every receipt from reservation through first rent.
