Meals matter. Guanxi often grows around hotpot, Sichuan food in Chengdu, or a long lunch with colleagues rather than a five-minute hallway chat. Split bills with young urban friends are more common than older stereotypes suggest, but hosts may still insist on paying the first time. Follow the table's lead and offer next time.

International districts help early on. Sanlitun in Beijing and the French Concession in Shanghai concentrate English-friendly meetups. Shenzhen and Guangzhou offer tech-and-trade networks. Inland Chengdu can feel friendlier face to face, yet English-only circles are thinner, so Mandarin practice pays off faster there.
