itsme sits on top of Belgian identity and banking rails. It cannot replace commune registration, a residence card, or a first bank account. Download the app only from the Apple App Store or Google Play, then activate through official itsme.be flows.
What do you need before activation?
You need a smartphone, a Belgian mobile or supported number for SMS checks, and either a Belgian eID with PIN plus card reader, or an account at a bank that offers itsme activation. Official support lists BNPPF (BNP Paribas Fortis), Belfius, KBC, CBC, ING, Hello Bank and Fintro for the bank route. The bank must already have read your identity document; a brand-new account without identity capture will not finish itsme onboarding.
The eID route starts on the itsme website with a computer and card reader, then continues in the app with an identification token and an SMS code from sender 8836. Choose a private itsme code and optional biometrics. Never share that code, SMS tokens, or eID PIN with callers who claim to be the bank, Card Stop, or itsme. Official guidance warns that logos are easy to fake in phishing mail.
Where will you use it after setup?
Flemish, Brussels and federal digital counters often offer itsme beside eID login. Mutualité apps, energy suppliers, telecom portals and banking strong-customer-authentication screens also rely on it. Until activation works, keep paper appointments and branch visits for time-critical steps such as ordering a residence card or filing mutualité membership.
If your bank is not on the activation list, use the eID path instead. Digibanken in Flanders and public digital spaces in Wallonia can lend a computer and reader when you have no hardware at home. International phone numbers may work for SMS in some cases, but activation still hinges on Belgian eID or a listed bank identity link.
Common misconceptions
itsme is not available the week you land with only a foreign passport. Commune registration, a Belgian eID or residence card, and usually a Belgian bank relationship come first.
A mutualité membership request also does not create itsme for you. Affiliation and digital login are separate: join the fund with your national number, then sign in later once itsme exists.
Summary
Finish Belgian domicile and obtain either a readable eID or a supported bank card, then activate itsme only through the official app and website.
Protect codes and PINs, ignore unexpected reactivation emails, and use the app for government, bank and mutualité logins once the token handshake succeeds. Without Belgian credentials, there is no honest shortcut into itsme.
