Findings

Most of the eight branded EU routes we checked keep paid work aimed at foreign employers or clients. Spain is the clearest partial exception for self-employed teleworkers (Spanish clients up to 20% of activity). Italy’s remote-worker and digital-nomad decree expressly covers highly qualified remote work for a company based abroad or in Italy.

We compared **branded EU digital nomad or remote-work residence products** where an official government page states who the holder may work for. Rows are limited to eight routes with a clear primary source. We did not mix passive-income or golden-visa products into this table.

Each `value` is a short paraphrase of the published local-work rule, not full legal advice. Consulates can add checklist wording. Confirm the live page before you apply.

Excluded for this brief: routes without a clean official local-work sentence we could cite in one line (including Greece’s digital-nomad practice notes that were not on a stable ministry checklist at verification). Portugal’s temporary-stay remote-work track was not included for the same reason.
